What nobody seems to be taking into account is that the major record labels are not record labels anymore. They're just small parts of multi national conglomerates.
When you own radio stations, stores, TV stations, media outlet, movie studios, websites and God knows what else why on earth would you put out something controversial that you can't promote using those? When you have that much clout & exposure you can put out what you like and force people to listen to it, not give them what they want.

Environment is key man, people are effected what's going on around them whether they know it or not. And if the environmental values, and needs are geared a certain way, then the musical in my opinion is directly effected.

Ouchie, ya cut me deep.
I can only half say yea to that statement Urb. I am sorry. There is so much obscure indie crap out there that, it's impossible to get it repetitively shoved down your throat. (But, I do see formula they are developing yes...)

I don't think you get what I'm saying.
I'm saying it's the indie labels job to take all the risks, then the majors will step in when they see something viable.

I think in our current times we still experience alot of social turmoil and injustice. There are still alot of political, social inequality as well as massacres that still continue till this day.
I don't think it is accurate to say that the reason why popular music is not political is a result of living in different times because we still live in a time where we experience so much social problems and injustice. We live in a time of: Trayvon Martin shooting Boston Bombing Connecticut Elementary Shooting Barney's Racial Profiling Controversy etc and etc. So we still experience the same issues as past eras have experience. My question is why do the record labels/artists not want to use music to promote social change like previous eras? They do not have to be leaders or activists to create a song that challenges people to think or to be aware. Everyone just cares about money. |

I don't think musical artists need to be burdened with such a responsibility if they don't want to.
Why do they gotta preach some revolutionary political agenda? just cause this ppl can play a nice tune it doesn't mean they should force their liberal viewpoints on their listeners and it doesn't even mean they'll make a good point, cause again just cause this ppl can make a nice tune it doesn't mean that makes them qualified to give out political advice. It's a little sick how we put some music artists on a pedestal and force our views on what we think they should do or shouldn't do, can they just be musicians? no, they gotta be political activist too now. as if they gotta role models on top of being a musician. There are tons of political activist in this world already, if you really care for their cause, YOU WOULD JOIN THEM! not wait at home for some musician to play some "we won't stand for this anymore" song, is it we don't care about world events until a guy makes a song about it?
