Idk about you but i can label Guided by voices as alternative indie.

And from alternative alone i can name you R.E.M, Pavement, The Breeders, Kashmir, and even the pixies fall into this label.

I agree it's a vague term but it helps to catalogue a certain kind of music.

Groups like REM and Pixies were called college rock until the whole "alternative" marketing juggernaut came into power.

I label them as a band where Robert Pollard could record himself reading his shopping list and he'd probably put it out as a limited edition 7 inch single.

Snobbery going on in here. Anybody who claims they don't know what someone is talking about when they talk about an indie rock sound is being an elitist. You know exactly what they mean: fey sounding indie pop/folk bands with guys singing in whiny voices like the Shins or Belle and Sebastian. If you claim that you don't know this then you're just playing dumb.

And yes I know that's a stereotype and doesn't describe indie as a whole.

Exactly.

Roxy even admitted to recognizing it but decided to change her tune :p

What nerd calls it 'alternative indie'?! :-P
I agree with alternative being a cringe worthy hootie and the ballsack genre.

I guess even Macklemore is Indie since he has no label, and I like his output so far.
