I'll always equate 'Alternative' as American bands that suck who wish they were on an independent label.

I think both terms work alongside another descriptor such as "Rock" or "Country", when on their own they can't really define anything. If I said "Death Grips are an Indie band" it isn't going to help you understand what type of music they make, if anything, it will steer you in the wrong direction because of those assumptions/implications that go along with the words "indie" and "alternative".

Bush were discovered by a Los Angeles radio station and were unknown in the UK.
In fact even today their first album still hasn't sold more than 60,000 over here.

So you can have them.

To me they're both associated with rock unless they have some other qualifier attached to them.

I agree with that, and I automatically assume that myself. But I was responding to Francis saying "Indie Alternative" is a genre. I mean, that's simply not something I can co-sign.
