I think any sound that you find affecting is music. Noise cannot be music because noise is unwanted sound. If you like stuff considered 'noise' such as static, it is no longer noise because you don't find it unwanted.

Music is whatever the hell you want it to be, like all art. I was trying to say it involves instruments, but then I just thought that almost anything can be an instrument, and a lot of different things have been used as instruments. As of right now, and I've been thinking about it for a whole 3 minutes, I can't think of anything that couldn't be used as an instrument to be totally honest.

Heard about Cromagnon? They predated Nirvana by like, 20 years

And music is sound you enjoy listening to. I don't think it can be pinned down more than that.

It involves sound.

Quote:
music: noun, often attributive \ˈmyü-zik\
: sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments

: written or printed symbols showing how music should be played or sung

: the art or skill of creating or performing music

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/music
Kind of a circular bit of definitions, innit?

I just thought about this for almost 24 hours, and I still can't define it. I'll see if I have anything in another 24. Excellent question.

I was about to say that the wikipedia page for 'music' offers a good enough definition but the contents differ between the english and the french page... And there are like 200 hundred different version of this page.

From the english page is a quote I find interesting by musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez :
"The border between music and noise is always culturally defined—which implies that, even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus ... By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be."
