I play the piano and sing, but i can't choose between them.?
Hey all.
The title might be a bit confusing, and i don't know if this is the right place to post this kind of a question. I'm 16 years old and i've been playing the piano for 11, soon 12 years. i have also sung for nearly 9 years, most of that time in a choir, about 2 years of solo singing. Everyone i know tells me i have a great future as a concert pianist. Last month, i won 1st place and a special prize for "best etude played" in the first big piano competition of my life. I love playing the piano, and i love composing my own pieces for the piano. My singing teacher says that when i keep practicing, one day i might become a very good tenor, or a high baritone. I love opera, but i also love progressive rock, especially classic rock. (Queen is my most favorite band of all, but i also love Pink Floyd, The Beatles, King Crimson and Genesis. sad that neither of them are no longer here...) I've been writing my own songs and lyrics for almost as long as i've been writing stuff for the piano. which is why i have always wanted to go to London when i finish my studies when i'm about 26 years old and form a band, where i'd be the lead singer and pianist. But that would mean wasting my talent as a pianist. On the other hand, If i become a concert pianist, i would have no time to sing and that is something i won't let happen. I don't want to give up neither playing the piano nor singing, because i love doing both of them too much. I've talked to so many people already, and everyone has said that if i want to become well-known, i need to concentrate on just one thing. I don't know what to do. please help, maybe give me some ideas |

THAT IS A LOAD OF BULL. Sorry to be so blatant with my opinion, but it really is. Some of the most revered artists of the world are multi-instrumentalists. First of all, no one can tell you what you should or shouldn't do, because we both know that you already have the answer to exactly what you want to do--don't wait for approval and validation from other people, because that would just inhibit you from being yourself, and putting your stuff out there. You have NO idea how lucky you are to possess both of those talents, and it would be a waste of you didn't use both of them on a daily (even hourly) basis. The nice thing about a piano, is that it can produce multiple melodies (because you are using two hands).. if you could add your voice, you've got yourself an entire song with a band. Use both of these skills in a way that facilitates your creativity. Sure, you can go to school for it, but school CANNOT teach you talent or creativity--that comes from deep inside of you. Just go with the flow my man.. or lady |

The chances are you're NOT going to become well known so do whatever makes you happiest.

Coming from a 14-year-old classically-trained (but also Beatles-trained ) son of a piano teacher, it all depends on what you're looking for. If you only want success, the classical pianist option is the way to go, as there are very few young people in that field, and if you excel at the piano, your chances are of success are better. That is the "sensible" route. However, I can tell by your post what you want to do. Follow your heart and chase your dreams. You only live once, so don't worry about what others think and say. Ever heard of Billy Joel? There is a gentleman who is one heck of a pianist, as well as an incredible vocalist. Good luck!

I'd say stick to both, just go with the piano if that is what you are best at and discover your own voice in the mean time. and instrument is a lot of practice, it is different with singing. To find your style and voice you need to know what you want but keep in mind what you are capable off. You are 16, you have time enough to try, decide, change your mind and decide again.
I have always thought I could not sing until my music teacher at school told me so when I was 12, now I can sing quite a range of styles, because I couldn't make a choice. Don't pick one, use all your talents and use what you are best at as your safety net. |
