Default Heading into God's country 2014: need your help guys

Next year I'm going to be looking into that heads-down, no nonsense, flat-out rockin' phenomenon known as, er, Christian Contemporary Music. Why? You do ask a lot of questions, don't you? Well as a return to "Stranger in a strange land" is on the cards in my journal, I wanted to try something different and it occurs to me I've never really listened to any music from this genre other than the odd Christian Metal band. So anyone who's more familiar with the genre and can point me in the proper direction would earn my gratitude.

I'm hoping to go right across the circuit, from those charismatic singers to Christian rock and metal, try to get a good idea of what's available and what, if any of it, is worth listening to. I know Plankton has some experience with this music and the lamented Geekoid, but he's no longer around it seems; I think Ki knows some of it too. Anyway, whoever you are, if you can give me a little help I'd appreciate it. Probably gonna hit this up maybe March of next year, so plenty of time to get your recs in.

Mods, please don't move this to the Noobs/looking for a rec? thread, as I don't want it subsumed by a bunch of people asking for recd for music like Slipknot etc; I need this to remain visible for a little while so that it has some chance of gaining some responses. Thanks.

This sounds like kind of a masochistic journey you're going on. I'm looking forward to reading it.

16 Horsepower and Wovenhand

Pretty much anything David Eugene Edwards touches is laced with religious ideology and allusion, however it lacks the proselytizing nature that you're going to be saturated in when you begin this little experiment of yours. He seems to get how to marry his love of music with his love of Christianity and it can be very inspiring, reminding you that despite how much groups like the Westboro Baptist Church have corrupted the popular image of the religion, it is one that, at it's core teaches peace and love for others.

I'll leave you with the lyrics to one of my favorite 16 Horsepower songs as an example of what to expect.

Spoiler for Poor Mouth lyrics:
Is anything as lovely to me as the truth in love
I'll take it over freedom any day
It brings me ever an' this time to my knees
An on my knees I run away

Yes, I know your sticks an' stones they
They will easily break these bones an'
An' all my words come back to haunt me

I will put my strength into
The things left standing
I am hoarse with wild eyes
No debts outstanding

My hands are yours, my brother
You can take my coat as well
My eyes are yours, sister
An my heart, an my heart
In which He dwells

Heard the voice of my Master callin' me
From deep in the hollow
Said that I must follow Him there, yeah

Is any place darker for me
With all them wolves about
Well, it's a poor mouth that I wear

My hands are yours, my brother
You can take my coat as well
My eyes are yours, sister
An' my heart, an' my heart
In which He dwells
In which He dwells

Livin' me from hand to poor mouth
You an' me an' our Secret South, oh Lord
I said livin' me from hand to poor mouth

Hey.. h-hold on a minute! Where am I? What was that in my drink?

Oh no! I wrote WHAT? I promised to --- oh good grief! Surely you guys wouldn't hold me to .... I see. You would. Well, I'm a man of my word. Who knows? Maybe this will help me get into Heaven...

What? There IS no Heaven? I need a drink. Oh no wait: that's how I got into this mess in the first place!

Seriously, thanks guys and yes I do have something of a masochistic streak in me, but this should be fun. Shouldn't it? Tell me it's going to be fun! Please! I need something to get me through this!!!

You really should start with the one band that spearheaded the mainstream Christian Metal movement:
