Default Jam Sessions or Cover Sessions?

Do you think that we should be improvising more than copying or am i the only person thinking that this way we're not going to get anything different from the 60, 70, 80 and 90's? shouldn't we be aiming something new instead?

Well i think when you cover (copy) a song it never sounds identical anyways and you are essentially making it your own whether you like it or not.

Although I have always respected bands who turn an old song into something completely different.

Covering songs is a blast, like rez said you are making it in your own way. You can maybe change up the strumming or rhythm on the song, or do it in a totally different genre or sound. It's up to you, it's not "copying" at all, it's a show of respect to the artists.

Always keep having jam sessions, dont focus so much on making new stuff because it will make you force it to much, try to let it flow naturally. Work on your covers and maybe something new will spark in your head later on. Good luck

I agree with the versions.. and i do understand that we're showing respect to the artist..
But what i can also see is that before everyone was trying to make something knew and as far as my kowledge shows me they didn't want to be compared to anyone else..
covers and versions are for sure part of the learning proress but don't you think that this can be "fear" of respecting and trusting ourselves as well as part of creation?
I can see loads of bands doing their own things as well but I think we need to risk more and not be always pleasant to our ears keeping us moving on a confort place of something that we've listened before.
I agree as well that if we put our minds into it we have to be carefull not to force it.. but i think we won't if we feel it different it will show us different..

to be honest i don't know nothing.. but i feel that something needs to be changed in the way we do songwritting...

Covers are great if your planning on being a cover band, or are getting your bearings working with new musicians, otherwise, get creative in a jam session.
