Unhappy Linda Ronstadt discloses she has Parkinson's, can't sing anymore

Very sad, one of my favorites! Had a bit of a crush on her for a while, too.

Linda Ronstadt Says Parkinson’s Took Her Ability to Sing
Quote:
Linda Ronstadt revealed that she has Parkinson’s disease in an interview with AARP magazine.

The 67-year-old singer told the magazine she was diagnosed eight months ago, but said she had suffered symptoms of the disease for eight years. Initially Ronstadt thought her symptoms were related to a tick-borne illness.

“Parkinson’s is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, ‘Oh, you have Parkinson’s disease,’ I was completely shocked,” Ronstadt told AARP. ” I wouldn’t have suspected that in a million, billion years.”

Ronstadt had a string of hits in the 1970′s including “You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved” and has sold tens of millions of albums.

My mom has all her albums - one of her most favourite artists. Sad to hear that news

Very touching column by a writer in one of the Seattle papers:

Linda Ronstadt Has Parkinson's Disease and Can No Longer Sing
Quote:
I got into my seat in the balcony and my friend sat next to me, and as the concert began I was caught up in swirling emotions. One song after another registered in my mind, but almost as if I were floating on some cloud, the ethereal nature of each expressive note lifting me on angel wings. And then, just as Linda finished singing a heart wrenching version of "Blue Bayou," as her last syllable echoed in the rafters, something welled inside me, and in the second or two of silence that seemed incongruous at that moment in a hall filled with people, I screamed out, "Linda, I love you!"

I was mortified even as the words left my lips, wishing to grab them and suck them back inside me, but they were shot across time and space and I felt like everyone heard them and was looking at me. Linda, far away on the stage, smiled and didn't miss a beat. She stared out into the abyss, the darkness of the hall and its thousand faces, and said, "I love you too!"

Terrible news. A real star and a true legend. I hope the doctor broke it to her more gently than the way she described! What a horrible thing to be told! Hope she's coping all right... Love ya Linda!

I remember hearing her sing the opera Pirates of Penzance. What a great voice!

Really sad to hear this news. I was lucky to see Linda 5 times in concert. What an amazing voice. I wish her the best in coping with her illness.

I'm not really a fan of her music, but what horrible news. Parkinson's is a terrible disease.

It really is, because it progresses and the only thing that can be done is to take a million pills a day to try and slow the progression. But you know in the back of your head that it's just going to get worse and worse.
