is there a happy nic cave song :)

djchameleon 09-12-2013 02:28 AM

Ship songs are probably sad because when you are out on a ship for long periods of time with nothing but the wide open ocean it seems lonely and you get this strange disconnect that you are isolated from all of civilization so that's how it translates into music.

misspoptart 09-12-2013 08:31 AM

Oh Rez, please forget ASAP!

And yeah. Ships are an epic symbol of distance I think. Just being far away from anything, really. And that is sad. But it could also be liberating and not sad, too. There are just...less songs like that.

Dr_Rez 09-12-2013 03:33 PM

New one up tonight.

Mondo Bungle 09-12-2013 04:51 PM

Get any submissions besides mine?

Deviouz 09-12-2013 05:54 PM

I submitted! Was a cool theme this week, I should have review of the rest of the tapes up real soon!

Well, I know that there are at least 4 submissions.

I also submitted something...I think!

Sorry about missng this a couple times now. I'm just incredibly busy. Here's a list of excuses:

1. Got a huge structural engineering project I need to get done at work.
2. The band has been gigging quite a bit.
3. Working with a friend on 3D models for a video game.
4. Recording quite a bit with my new Dobro.
5. Working on tunes for the new album.
6. I'm lazy.
7. No I'm not.

Hopefully, after tonights show, we'll be done for a while. I'll try and get back into this if it hasn't dried up by then.

Dammit all, weekly mixtapes with themes and me without a computer.

Trollheart 09-15-2013 03:59 PM

Rez, you need to take or get someone to take those asterisks off the beginning of the thread title. Every time I see it I'm thinking "Fuck the themed weekly member mixtape!"

Mondo Bungle 09-15-2013 04:14 PM

He should also put up the new tape

Dr_Rez 09-15-2013 09:42 PM

Sorry Everyone, I pulled my groin and have not been online posting or anything. The mixtape is together I just need tag and upload. Sorry about the holdup, I promise I will have it up monday though.

Again my apologies, new classes starting, new girl, and pulled groin have made my time on computer limited last few days.

Mondo Bungle 09-15-2013 09:44 PM

New girl, pulled groin huh?

Awesome! So what's the next theme?

Mondo Bungle 09-16-2013 07:29 PM

Hopefully I'll have a review up later.

Mondo Bungle 09-16-2013 08:03 PM

People of San Francisco - Enviromental San Francisco II (just copy/pasting ;))

This was a nice soothing track, pretty minimalist and cool. I think it set up my track rather nicely.

Neurosis - Souls At Zero

I love this track a lot. Crushing and epic. Lyrics are open to interpretation, and I get a somewhat environmental message here.

Dan Fogleberg - Blind to the Truth

Not really my thing, but I mean, I didn't hate it. I like the lyrics though.

Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun - A Thin Rowan Tree

I thought this was gonna pick up at some point, but it was still cool. I'm an accordion fan, they always catch my attention.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The World As We Know It

This is no offense to Dj at all, but I generally hate stuff like this. A friend of mine likes this band, and I just don't at all. It all sounds the same to me, all this modern melodic metalcore. I still love you :)

Goldfrapp - Hairy Trees

I've been hearing a lot of this in plug, and been genuinely enjoying it. It's all pretty downtempo and soothing. And I dig the vocals. Of all the songs I've heard from them, I think this one is my favorite. I really dig that synth going on.

Ministry - Isle of Man (Version II)

What can I say? Ministry is awesome. This song is awesome.

Elder - Release

Thanks for blowing my mind bro. This was incredible. Real heavy and weird awesome technical leads. I'm inclined to listen to more of this band.

Nujabes Minmi - Shiki No Uta (Audiodoctor Remix)

So this wasn't on the track list, wtf. I dunno who submitted it but this is nice. That's a real intoxicating beat.

Pretty decent tape. Not to brag, but I think this started off with an awesome blast from the first two tracks.

haha no problem. I can only find the one EP with this song and another that is about 10 minutes as well called spires burn. Will investigate further and get back to you.

Edit: Found the new album, have not listened yet, will pm you link and we can check it out.

Sorry for the lateness;

Week 2 - PROTEST, review:

1. Ryan Harvey - Gentrification [Mondo Bungle] - Not my kinda song, although the message was clear and a rebellion has been formed. Some drums would be good, even if subtle. - 4/10

2. John Lennon - Working Class Hero [Plankton] - Wonder what this would sound like in FLAC or 320kbps. I liked it, I like John Lennon, I like, "fckuing crazy...", I liked it. One of those shackle songs if you know what I mean. (Not a sexual reference) - 8/10

3. R.E.M. - Welcome to the Occupation [rostasi] - Alright song, nothing amazing, but alright. Not much too say bout this, don't know how to put it into words. - 6/10

4. William Shatner - I Can't Get Behind That [Trollheart] - Never heard a song like this before, I like it though. Thought I had [Adult Swim] playing in the background!

"I can't get behind a fat ass!"

-9/10

5. Wingnut Dishwashers Union - F**k Every Cop (Who Ever Did His Job) [wolverinewolfweiselpigeon] - Nice track title. Some anarchy type shiet, cool break in the middle of the song. Didn't like the singers voice though, but lyrics were on point. - 7/10

6. The Knife - Stay Out Here [Pedestrian] - Beginning sounds like end credits for Tekken, which is never a bad thing. Vocals were eerie, the beat was alright. A bit long for me though. - 8/10

7. Blood Axis - The Hangman and the Papist [bob.] - Cool song! didn't like the vocals or the lyrics though, blame my taste. Which is very poor. Would be cool if there was an instrumental to this. Digged the snares at 1:40! - 6/10

8. Frank Zappa - Who Are the Brain Police [FrownLand] - I can hear Chelsea Wolfe doing a cover to this, maybe. Eerie song, the singer was alright and the lyrics were on the same par. Don't know when I'd listen to this song. Is this his style of music? I'll look into him some more. - 6/10

9. Dead Prez - Malcolm, Garvey & Huey (feat. Divine) - Prefer Lloyd Banks' "Beamer, Benz & Bentley", but was a good mix. Didn't think the production suited the lyrics though. Divine was alright, Dead Prez kills it as always. - 7/10

10. Deltron 3030 - 3030 - Rezdaddy Longlegs - I ****s with Deltron 3030, when I first heard the album I was blown away! This song especially. Always a fan of Del's rapping. Sampling work was excellent, I think kids, 1017 years from now, would bump this. - 10/10

11. Santogold - Shuv It (feat. Three 6 Mafia & Project Pat) [ME! Yay!] - Really like Santogolds singing. The hook is just badassery imo. - ?/10

12. Wax Audio - Sad But Superstitious (Metallica/Stevie Wonder Mashup) [Yac] - Really low quality, hopefully there is a better quality out there I can snatch. Dope mashup, been a while since I heard a good flowing mashup. - 8/10

13. Chthonic - Bloody Gaya Fulfilled [Duga] - Don't usually like heavy songs like this one, but this is an exception. The female backing vocals were cool, and the dude screaming just flowed really well with the song. Not good, but not bad either imo. - 8/10

Dr_Rez 09-17-2013 07:57 AM

oops totally forgot to throw that in :(

that was me :)

downloading the mix now

what is the next theme? :)

edit

1. rotasi: Create - Environmental San Francisco II
was wondering if this would really kick in....and i must say i'm glad it didn't....very minimal and nice ambient track and a great opening for this mix

2. Mondo Bungle: Neurosis - Souls At Zero
i think the lyrics for this one are pretty straight forward for the subject.....that guitar was the thing that drew me to this band....love this track

3. Trollheart: Dan Fogelberg - Blind to the Truth
fits perfect with subject....at first i was thinking to myself "what the fuck happened to you Dan Fogelberg?"....but have to admit that i really liked this by the end....think i may check out his early 90s stuff

4. Frownland: Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun - A Thin Rowan Tree
this was awesome man.....a seriously unique track....well done :)

5. djchameleon: Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The World As We Know It
was a little weary because of the singers voice....but actually really enjoyed this one...the lyrics were great

6. misspoptart: Goldfrapp - Hairy Trees
gorgeous track...the music and the vocals worked perfectly together....plus so far at least i think this may be the only track that concentrates more on the concept of "one's" environment....rather than the destruction of earth

7. bob.: Ministry - Isle of Man (Version II)
it was either this or Pailhead's Man Should Surrender....decided to go with old Ministry for a change

8. Rez: Elder - Release
nice and epic....well picked :)

9. Deviouz: Nujabes Minmi - Shiki No Uta (Audiodoctor Remix)
much like the first track this was a perfect ending to this mix....love the beats and just the flow of the entire track....since i have no clue as to what this chick is saying....i'll assume it works perfect for this mix :)

i would say this is the best pairing of songs since the first mix...well done everyone :)

Dr_Rez 09-19-2013 02:45 PM

Theme For September 19 - September 25 will be Psychedelic

Trollheart 09-19-2013 03:38 PM

Man I have let these back up haven't I? Sorry sorry, Metal Month you know...

Anyhoo...

Quote:

1. rostasi: Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding
I loved this. Very minimalistic and I like how his accent keeps breaking through. Great guitar work and some fine piano.
Quote:

2. Mondo Bungle: Bad Braids - Ships
Actually reminds me of Heather from Mostly Autumn. Really like this too. Had to turn it up in the beginning then in the middle it gets really loud. Sorry neighbours!
Quote:

3. Rezdaddy Longlegs: Radio Moscow - Deep Blue Sea
Ah, can't beat the blues Rez! Sweet!
Quote:

4. Deviouz: Namco - Formless Like Water
Not usually my sort of thing but I enjoyed this, although I did think I was listening to Yello for the first few seconds!
Quote:

5. bob.: Black Heart Procession - Ships Of Gold
Like this a lot. Think it's cool that he got his cat to sing with him!
Quote:

6. Trollheart: It Bites - The Tall Ships
My song that you all hated, may you be cursed to early graves, one and all! ;) You're all just unable to appreciate the greatness of this song. No, I am NOT Nickleback_rules, how dare you suggest such a thing?
Quote:

7. djchameleon: Gorillaz - Pirate Jet
DJs gonna roll his eyes at this, but sorry man, no Gorillaz song is ever getting near my ears. Even since I read in an interview with them that they tried to set a cat on fire because they "thought it was a good idea at the time" I've hated these guys with all my heart. I have a few redline issues and animal cruelty is one. So I didn't even let the song play. Sorry. Just how I feel.

Ok so basically a really good mix, enjoyed most if not all of it. I'll do the most recent one soon.

Frownland 09-19-2013 04:37 PM

1. rotasi: Create - Environmental San Francisco II
This track was great, my favourite on the tape.

2. Mondo Bungle: Neurosis - Souls At Zero
This one's got some riveting moments and a singer that sounds quite a bit like Tom Araya, who is my Elvis.

3. Trollheart: Dan Fogelberg - Blind to the Truth
I thought this track was cheesy on the musical side, but the lyrics weren't bad and the singer had a good voice. I did like the solos at the end, too.

4. Frownland: Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun - A Thin Rowan Tree
A little background on this one: Oiun was imprisoned in a Serbian jail at the time of this recording for reasons unknown to a google search, but I assume that it's well known in Tuva. He invented his own form of kargryaa, which is the deeper form of throat singing. I love the passion with which he sings and his accordion playing is very beautiful. I can't find any translated lyrics, but Tuvan culture glorifies nature, so I'll assume that this track does the same.

5. djchameleon: Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The World As We Know It
Good instrumentation, but I disliked the singing style. That being said, the singer pairs well with the band and he clearly has a good voice for that style of vocals.

6. misspoptart: Goldfrapp - Hairy Trees
This was a nice track, I like the strings and flute's meshing with the electronic sounds.

7. bob.: Ministry - Isle of Man (Version II)
Ministry never fails to deliver, this track is of no exception.

8. Rez: Elder - Release
This was a sweet song, the guitars are great and it has a very fluent progression. It did drag on for a wee bit though.

9. Deviouz: Nujabes Minmi - Shiki No Uta (Audiodoctor Remix)
I dig the jazziness of the guitar in the beginning. Very laid back tune, I like it.

Trollheart 09-19-2013 05:37 PM

... and here it is!

Quote:

1. rotasi: People of San Francisco - Enviromental San Francisco II
Almost eleven minutes of virtually nothing happening. Liked it though: very esoteric, sort of reminded me of morning at the docks or something.
Quote:

2. Mondo Bungle: Neurosis - Souls At Zero
Not really my thing. Didn't like the vocals but the big guitars were ok. Couldn't take nine minutes of it though...
Quote:

3. Trollheart: Dan Fogelberg - Blind to the Truth
Mine, so skipping
Quote:

4. Frownland: Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun - A Thin Rowan Tree
Ah, Frownland you loon! Always something way out there! Sounds like an aged, Russian Tom Waits playing for drinks and tips in a Vladivostok bar, having woken up in an alley a week prior and trying to work his way back to the USA! Not a massive fan of the accordion but it's used well.
Quote:

5. djchameleon: Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The World As We Know It
Good man DJ! Something different from you! Love this! Reminds me a little of Balance of Power. Or a slightly more restrained Lostprophets. Good stuff.
Quote:

6. misspoptart: Goldfrapp - Hairy Trees
Oh my god that voice is sex incarnate! Love this Emily! Hate the title though :p:
Quote:

7. bob.: Ministry - Isle of Man (Version II)
Yeah.. not really into electro/industrial/whatever this is. Not for me.
Quote:

8. Rez: Elder - Release
I liked this one a lot too, though I must admit I think the music was better than the vocal. Just lacking something, for me. Great song though. What genre is this Rez? Sounds proggy in ways...
Quote:

9. Nuajbes Minmi - Shiki ni ula [/b](thanks for leaving this one off the list, Rez, so I had to spell it myself!)
Very cool and laidback, and love those brassy keys. Is this soul? Sure sounds like it. Not sure who submitted this. Again I prefer the music to the vocal though. Yeah yeah, picky picky...

Does anybody think that my would-have-been submission, Battleship Grey by DJ Tiesto, could have made this mixtape better or worse? Just curious. :)

I used to listen to Battleship Grey years ago it's a great track!

I read it in I think Classic Rock, maybe, not sure. But it was definitely confirmed. If they were being serious. Went something like this:

Interviewer: What's this rumour that you set a cat on fire for one of your videos? (or maybe before one of your videos, can't remember)

Guy from Gorillaz (gimme a name and it'll prob ring a bell) : (Grinning) Yeah, seemed like a good idea at the time.

Sure, he may not have been serious but the rumour must have started somewhere and if not true then rather than take the opportunity to squash or refute it he was basically confirming it, not apologising and making like it was ok.

Damn Gorillaz! Sooner they're extinct the happier I'll be.

Note: Last line above is said in a light tone but I'm deadly serious. I sat open-mouthed after reading that and considered writing to the mag, but as Engine pointed out so succinctly about my journals, nobody cares. :(

Trollheart 09-19-2013 07:30 PM

Yeah the basic idea seems to be hardwired into every article and fansite about them --- "Used to set fire to cats". I can't get anything online that will actually confirm it happened, but it looks like something more than just a rumour from what I can see.

Murdoc. That's the one. Apparently.

Dr_Rez 09-19-2013 07:54 PM

@trollheart: It is stoner rock or doom, somewhere in those realms.

yeah, you are upset over a joke. You do know Gorillaz is an animated band right?

misspoptart 09-20-2013 03:22 AM

rotasi: Create - Environmental San Francisco II
Well...I usually like ambient stuff, so I'm trying to like it. But it might be just a bit too abstract for me. :)

2. Mondo Bungle: Neurosis - Souls At Zero
Ugggggggghhhhhhhhhhh.

3. Trollheart: Dan Fogelberg - Blind to the Truth
This is...upbeat somehow. Is this 80s? Is that what this is? Music from that strange decade in which weird stuff happened? A lot?

4. Frownland: Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun - A Thin Rowan Tree
Wow, does this dude sound constipated. That's all I'm gonna say. No, wait. I LOVE ACCORDIONS!!

5. djchameleon: Scary Kids Scaring Kids - The World As We Know It
Flashback to 2003, when my internet friend from Staten Island almost committed suicide. This is the kind of stuff he listened to. So....yeah, not that really into it. EMO!

6. misspoptart: Goldfrapp - Hairy Trees
I used to listen to this driving home in the snow from school/work in Maine. A very relaxing track. I so miss driving a convertible. But yeah, echoing what bob (I think) said, this song is about one's environment more than the environment at large. I hope ya'll liked it. I find it so soothing and sexy.

7. bob.: Ministry - Isle of Man (Version II)
Oh yeah. Eerie. I love eerie. It reminds me of when someone puts a cell phone speaker up to their mouth and tries to alter the sound. The droning, I mean. Also, very industrial and strange. Although the song is about the deterioration of the environment, I had the sense that this song was from an environmentless place to begin with. If you get what I mean.

8. Rez: Elder - Release
*headbangs*

9. Deviouz: Nujabes Minmi - Shiki No Uta (Audiodoctor Remix)
What a lovely, lazy way to end this mix. I love Japanese people and their music. Thanks for this! :)

Keep it up, Rezdaddy! I look forward to this at work every week!

They may be an animated band but they're not alive on thier own. There are still people making that music and to my knowledge that's where the rumour comes from. If you can prove it's unfounded, fine, but until then I'm not interested.

1990 as it happens. His next-to-last album before his death, and one of his better ones from that latter period. I'm running an in-depth profile on this criminally-underrated songwriter in my journal if anyone's interested...
