Listened to it twice today so here's my view:
1. Mondo Bungle: NoMeansNo - Dead Bob Quite an interesting track to start off the mixtape. Some nice off-kilter hardcore punk with it's tongue placed firmly in cheek. 2. rostasi: The Soil and The Sun - There Is No Death I loved this one. A very mellow and beautiful song that's quite comforting to listen to. Might investigate further. 3. Trollheart: Nick Cave - O'malley's Bar When I saw that it was 14 minutes long I thought it was going to drag and drag, but I really enjoyed this. It's more like a dark story turned into a song and keeps you glued as it unfolds. 4. Deviouz: Kno - La Petite Mort (Come Die With Me) I'm not much of a hip-hop head but this was another one I enjoyed. There's a nice laid-back feel to this song with an interesting backing track. 5. Arya Stark: Misfits - Die, Die My Darling I'm already very familiar with the Misfits so I know this song very well. Wouldn't be my favourite Misfits song but you could nearly put any of their songs into this mix. 6. Rezdaddy Longlegs: Steel Panther - Death To All But Metal A gloriously dumb slice of 80's-inspired parody metal. Wouldn't be something I'd listen to more than a handful of times of but the lyrics made me chuckle. 7. Frownland: Diamond Terrifier - Kill The Self That Wants To Kill Yourself I liked the atmosphere and sense of melancholy on this track. It's a very experimental and out there track with some wild sax (at least I think it's a saxophone) adding a sense of pain to it. 8. bob.: Depeche Mode - Flies On The Windscreen This song reminded me that I really need to explore their back catalog a lot more. It's as good as you'd expect from 80's Depeche Mode. 9. gunnels: Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here This was the highlight of the mixtape for me. I've been meaning to get into Porcupine Tree for so long but this song has finally inspired me to do so. An amazing and powerful song. 10. Zer0: In The Woods... - Mourning The Death Of Aase I took a bit of a risk with this track as it's more of a mood piece than a proper song and might not work depending what song it followed. But it sounded perfect following the Porcupine Tree song. I think it sums of the feeling of sorrow and sadness associated with death very nicely. 11. Plankton: Sevendust - Angels Son Not bad but not something I'd really be into. It's heartfelt and well-performed but strays a little too much into American radio-rock territory for my liking. 12. misspoptart: The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build a Home Another song I'm familiar with. This song was the PERFECT song to finish this mixtape. An incredibly beautiful and moving song that you can find some kind of comfort in. |
I agree zero that the highlight was gunnels song by Porcupine tree. That entire album Deadwing is actually incredible. Porcupine tree has put out its fair shair of wonderful music but Deadwing which seams to be a concept album imo is just perfect. The perfect mix of metal, psychadelic, blues...etc

Here are my thoughts, but first Rez, did something happen to the tags? There are none on any of the songs (album/artist) and I know they were at least present on mine!
Anyhoo, on we go.... Quote:

So it seems for a mix that started off badly for me, it got much better halfway and just didn't drop in quality after Gunnels' contribution. Probably the best mix (for me) thus far. :thumb: |

If those were not there idk what to tell you, because the metadata is there and when I unzip and open in any media player the artist/songnames/track shows up. |
Would be interesting if this turned into a game with a point system or somethin'...
Will post my review starting with the first part soon! |
The new theme will be Ship
August 29th to September 4th |
I'm glad you liked my track, Zer0 and TH, it's a song that I feel deals directly with death indeed. I'm glad I submitted it so late, because it does fit nicely on the end there, huh? :)
I'm downloading now, will post a review soon! 1. Mondo Bungle: NoMeansNo - Dead Bob Meh. Not really my thing. Skip. 2. rostasi: The Soil and The Sun - There Is No Death My friend just had a baby (he's two weeks old) and this song totally spoke to a new life and how amazing it is. I totally zoned out and got lost deep in thought. Just great! 3. Trollheart: Nick Cave - O'malley's Bar A meandering and funny tale that I am way to ADD to listen to. Still, this kind of music is way more entertaining than people give it credit for. 4. Deviouz: Kno - La Petite Mort (Come Die With Me) I love smart hip hop, and this is rather genius. An eerie and addictive tune. Good submission, Deviouz! 5. Arya Stark: Misfits - Die, Die My Darling The punk tracks are not really doing it for me, either, not because I don't like punk but because I don't like this kind of loud and angry death thing. Death to me is a sad and somber, slow thing. 6. Rezdaddy Longlegs: Steel Panther - Death To All But Metal See above...uhhhh... 7. Frownland: Diamond Terrifier - Kill The Self That Wants To Kill Yourself What is this! I have never heard music like this before. It is weird. What is happening? AHHHHHH. Well, that was a trip. 8. bob.: Depeche Mode - Flies On The Windscreen Don't know anything about Depeche Mode but I guess they are kinda a big deal. They had a show in Turkey this spring that caused quite a stir. As for this song...it's okay. It goes well with the theme, methinks. Since I'm not really into death, it makes sense that I wouldn't really be into this song. 9. gunnels: Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here This is yet another band that I have never heard anything from but constantly heard about in high school and college. I'm very excited to find out if I like them. Wow, it's cool. It's definitely very very very much about death. And for that reason it is so hard to stop listening to! I like it. 10. Zer0: The Woods... - Mourning The Death Of Aase Very ethereal and new. I have never heard such a song, and I think it makes a lovely addition to the mixtape! 11. Plankton: Sevendust - Angels Son I've definitely heard this song before and I like it so much. I'm glad I can attach a name to it. I think this is one of those songs my mom has plays in the background. She always has music playing. What a great track. I didn't know anything about your taste Plankton but if this is anything to go by I think we'd have some in common. :) 12. misspoptart: The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build a Home Okay even though I submitted this I think it's still fair to comment! My song (I think) is about the feelings and emotions of the death of a wife/husband. You have done so much to build a life together, and the little things that were all a part of it seem lifeless after that person is gone, but you still feel like that person is there with you somehow, like a ghost. I find this song to be incredibly sad and I always cry when it plays! Even when I'm in a perfectly happy mood. I enjoyed the mix! It was my first week participating and downloading and I love this idea, Rez! Thanks! |
Great idea looking forward to this!

Forigve my amateur writng, first review for week 1, part 1; 1.) Dengue Fever - Tiger Phone Card [Urban Hatemonger] - Wow! Wasn't expecting this. The lyrics were cheese, not too much cheese, but the right amount. Enough that I'd rip my... Their singing is a perfect match, Chhom Nimol has that eerie-soft Chinese-esque voice. Love it, adds to the cheese which like I said before, was good! Anyway, I've had this on repeat on YT for a while now, need to extract it to my iPod soon. looking into an album download as I write this! Great submission! - 9/10 2.) Killing Joke - Inside the Termite Mound [LoathsomePete] - Sounds like KoЯn. I liked it, a bit depressing but adds to the overall ambience of the song which is dark and gritty. Great sound. Lyrics were something else, not sure about how I feel about it at this juncture. Will give it a few more spins. I was reading a video description of this song on YT and it sounds like Killing Joke's catalogue is mostly political radicalism. True? Will look into a few more of their songs though. - 7/10 3.) Jesu - Farewell [Chrysalis] - I wasn't sure on how I felt about this song. Didn't like the vocals, thought they were too cheese. Although I couldn't hear him clearly, the vocals were cheese sonically. The synths were not my taste. But after the 4 minute mark when the bells kicked in, the song had pulled me out of my chair and I was standing idly in a desert looking at a pyramid. Just lost in a trance. It's one of those songs that wave a pendulum in front of your face subtly telling you you're sleepy. Final verdict? Still not sure how I feel about this song, but would give it a few more spins, maybe. ?/10 4.) Ken Kiernan & Ger McDonnell - Crom Cruach [Trollheart] - Weird, man. Sounds like, Tarzan meets Willow, if they ever made a movie like that, this song would fit perfectly. Just a weird song. Don't know when or where I'd listen to this again. Not really my thing. 3/10 5.) Beats Antique - Dope Crunk [Mondo Bungle] - Haha, this was cool. Not sure how this fits in with protest, although I could see a trailer to Assassins Creed with the protagonist jumping buildings and killing Templars from the sky, nodding with the beat. Like it overall, good composition, doesn't get repetitive and creative, just sonically pleasing! Great submission! 9/10 6.) Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Atlas Hands [Dr. Rez] - Nice, really nice. Beautiful. This song is just asking to be sampled. Good story telling to go along with a really good, subtle voice. Only problem I have with it is the length of the song. Everything else is really pure! 9/10 7.) Fort Minor - Petrified (Doors Remix) [djchameleon] - This wasn't too bad. I haven't heard the original so I wouldn't be able to compare. Could be mixed a bit better, low ends were all over the place. Maybe just my speakers. I'm always a fan of Shinoda's rapping. Felt like there was something missing with the overall mix, something gritty was missing. Heavy guitar maybe? Idk, song was alright. 7/10 8.) Chameleons - Second Skin [zer0] - Now, I may be a bit biased when it comes to your taste in music zer0. This is the type of 80's song I can really dig and play over and over. Would probably play this on a CD after New Order's, Crystal. Whole vibe of the song is really pleasing to the ears! 9/10 9.) Psalter - Dumpster Divers [Blarobbarg] - Sorry, didn't dig this song at all. I appreciate the energy but just doesn't move me at all. Lyrics were really cheese. I could only imagine the music video. 1/10 Week 1, part 2 review; 1.) Nouvelle Vague - No One Knows [wolverinewolfweiselpigeon] - This is a cool cover. Sounds like it could be the intro for a 007 film or the end of a Johnny English sequel. Soothing voice, smooth beat = one of my fave songs on the tape! 9/10 2.) Stara Rzeka - Przebudzenie Boga Wschodu [rostasi] - I thought I had, The Lovely Bones, playing in the background, haha. The beginning sounds a bit like a Cocteau Twins song. The guitars are a bit too loud and layered, almost distorted. Again, maybe my speakers acting up. And, gawdamn. The beat kicks in, and the song just loses it like it just popped a Molly! My fave kinda insanity, very entertaining. Although a bit too loud and messy for my taste. 8/10 3.) The Killers - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine [Powerstars] - Can't go wrong with The Killers. One of my favorite songs from them. Good pick! 9/10 4.) Alpine Decline - Sleeping Gas [duga] - Not sure how I felt about this one, it was good, but nothing spectacular. I think I have a couple songs that are the same sonically. Good pick, though. 7/10 5.) Sonny Sharrock - Promises Kept [Frownland] - I just recently started to get into jazz after watching the anime, Sakamichi no Apollon (The Kids on the Slope). I just loved the swing the music has. The drum solo was sick! This song just reminded me to pick some brains at the jazz forum here and to watch the anime again. Only thing missing from this song is a glass of whiskey and a cigarette. But that's my fault! 9/10 6.) Grand Belial's Key - Vultures of Misfortune [The Batlord] - I hate this song with a fiery passion. Why? Because I had this up pretty loud during the beginning then... I should've guessed from the name of the band it was going to be pretty heavy. Not my kinda music but I respect the energy it produces, had me head banging a bit. ;) 7/10 7.) Twelve Foot Ninja - Ain't That A Bitch [Astronomer] - Nice mellow vibe, sounds like Panic! abit. Totally dig everything after 2:00. Whole vibe changes to a heavy-anthem track. Really liked this one, probably wouldn't listen to this often, but would be regrettable to not have it on my iTunes when the time arises! 8/10 8.) Flume - Insane [Vanilla] - Not really my kinda electronic music. The vocals were alright, didn't like the pitch-shifts though. Not much going on. Had potential, maybe a remix would do this song justice. 4/10 9.) Corrections House - Hoax the System [bob.] - This what I expected the whole mixtape to sound like. Especially with a theme like, protest. A cliche protest song is how you could describe this song. Would never listen to this song again unless it was in a movie. And it should be in one. Ain't my type of song. 3/10 10.) Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings [Arya Stark] - I remember this song from the video, which was kinda eerie. Kinda stuck on how to describe how I feel about this song. Upbeat-mellow-eerie. Love this song, would listen to this again! 9/10 11.) Coffins - Decapitated Crawl [Sequoioideae] - Not feeling it. 0/10 12.) Rush - Time Stand Still [Plankton] - Always biased towards 80's music. The female backing was really cool. Just overall a cool song. Good pick! 8/10 13.) Let's Active - Horizon [Burning Down] - Kinda song I'd listen to speeding through the desert in GTA: SA in my Bullet after I pick up my gurrl from her flat in Las Venturas. Then we go to San Fierro and setup shop there cause she just graduated police academy and was assigned to the SFPD. 2 years later happily married I get caught up in a drug deal I can't back out of and my photo gets sent to her office (she was promoted to Chief) and she starts to cry and tries hard to look for me, but I've gone back to Las Venturas and I'm crying to this song remembering our endeavors together and knowing I can never see her again... because I ain't going back to prison... not again... 9/10 |

None of the songs on the first mix were for any sort of theme; Rez only hit that in the second week.
Damn fine reviews; surprised you described it as amateur. Nothing of the sort. :thumb: |
Sorry I didn't participate in this one...it's been a busy week. I went ahead and still compiled a Spotify playlist for those interested. I'll try to get in on this week's!

A thousand apologies for missing this week... been real busy. |
Well here's the only review it's gonna get.
Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding I really enjoy the Soft Machine and Wyatt's solo albums. This is a nice track, bass and drums playing some soft jazz,. I don't have much to say about songs I already know. Bad Braids - Ships My song. Gives me a certain chill. Rado Moscow - Deep Blue Sea Some kind of new school blues rock that I can dig. Acoustic licks are tasty. Psychedelic vocals with that reverb. Pretty alright. Namco - Formless Like Water I do like many video game's music, I don't know this. It was satisfyingly catchy. That bass line was infectious. Black Heart Procession - On Ships of Gold Here we go, best song on the album. I love this kind of thing, but alas, I haven't heard this before. It sounds like it's building up to something epic, but continues on it's mellow path. That's not necessarily bad, though, I dug this. t Bites - The Tall Ships If I hadn't heard this, and only read the wikipedia description, I would have thought this could be cool. But I honestly didn't think this song was cool. Sounded like a modern rock and pop country hybrid. The vocals were lame as well. Gorillaz - Pirate Jet I never listen to Gorillaz, but whenever they come on, I kind of dig it. This was a decent song, short and simple, but I really enjoyed that beat. And I like this at the end, thought it was a good closer. This week had a good flow, not too many songs, but I liked six out of seven. The track arrangement seemed great though, but that's just me, I don't know why. |

Okay, maybe this won't be much of a review, but I did listen to the whole mixtape and I am having feelings about it. First of all, why so sad? This is really a sad, sad collection of songs guys. Really mellow. Actually I was about to submit something and it was sad, too. So I guess that makes sense. Mondo, I love your submission, Bad Braids - Ships. It was one of the two songs on this tape that I'll listen to again. :) Very chilling indeed. Namco - Formless Like Water was also good. I like video game music though, and I'm a sucker for anything that reminds me of Sonic 3D blast. This did! I basically hated Black Heart Procession - On Ships of Gold and t Bites - The Tall Ships. Sorry to whoever submitted those. Depressing and depressingly upbeat. As would be expected, I dig Gorillaz - Pirate Jet. I had never heard it though! I love listening to isolated newness from artists I already know I like. Does anybody think that my would-have-been submission, Battleship Grey by DJ Tiesto, could have made this mixtape better or worse? Just curious. :) |

and i agree this was an oddly sad mix of music...but i love sad music so it worked out perfect for me 1. rostasi: Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding i really enjoyed this man...a great start of the mix....and really sets the mood 2. Mondo Bungle: Bad Braids - Ships ok....when i first glanced this over i thought this was Bad Brains....keeping in mind that i load these playlists onto my ipod and listen to them while driving....you can imagine my surprise when this haunting and beautiful voice comes over the speakers :)....all i can say man is this track is the winner for me....loved it :) 3. Rezdaddy Longlegs: Radio Moscow - Deep Blue Sea uber bluesy psyche rock....i was reading about these guys a couple days ago and was thinking i should check them out.....you sir have solidified that notion :) thanks 4. Deviouz: Namco - Formless Like Water interesting considering it's the background for a video game?....it all honesty i would have never guessed that....i had no idea they put this much effort into game music production...still a solid track for what it is 5. bob.: Black Heart Procession - Ships Of Gold of course my first thought was to upload The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryers....but figured most of you would not listen to an hour and a half of minimal classic music :)....then i thought about this amazing track about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustlof but figured you guys don't want people screaming German at you....this is by far my favorite track from the album 3 6. Trollheart: It Bites - The Tall Ships at first i was weary about this one....obviously very prog but a bit poppy at the same time....the dudes voice is a little annoying and it almost sounds like a horrible christian pop song.....by the end i actually really enjoyed all of it.....esp the chorus 7. djchameleon: Gorillaz - Pirate Jet great track from a great album....nice pick sir :) |

First of all, curse you all who hated my track "The tall ships"! I hope something slighly unpleasant happens to you, like an onion falling on your head!
Second, I'd like to venture to say taht this mix is not only about listening to other music, but it's also about interacting with others and letting them know what you think of their music choices. Pretty clear what you all think of mine, damn philistines! :D Seriously, that's how I see it. Some of the music is good, some not so good but it's nice for people to be saying "Sir/Madam, your music sucks/rocks, or alternatively sucks rocks!" I think it's pretty essential and hope it don't die.... |
Incidentally, I don't know why most of the songs about ships are sad, but they are. I suppose it's all based on ships taking people away from their loved ones. Not too many upbeat happy songs about ships that I know. Funnily enough, it was only that I had already submitted a Nick Cave track last week that I didn't use "The Ship Song" from him, and yep, it's a sad song!
