Yay! Finally! Downloading now!

duga 08-14-2013 10:13 PM

Only missed one song this time...Spotify didn't have Nouvelle Vague's "No One Knows". Everything else is here, though!

MB Weekly Member Mixtape #1, Part 2 on Spotify

I'll post my thoughts on both parts soon!

Holy **** duga you are fast. I just posted that like 20 minutes ago.

Dr_Rez 08-14-2013 11:46 PM

Allright so I listened a few times and while I liked most of the songs 4 really stood out.

11. wolverinewolfweiselpigeon: Nouvelle Vague - No One Knows
Well Queens is one of my favorite bands ever so naturally a cover is automatically awesome. This is more than a cover though, sounds nothing like the original and did a great job capturing a vibe I can only explain as Queens meets the elevator.

17. Astronomer: Twelve Foot Ninja - Ain't That A Bitch
This may have been my favorite song on the album. It sounds alot like a band I like called She Loves Pablo. Nothing about it is normal, and I could never see it becoming popular or going on the radio but it sure caught my attention.

18. Vanilla: Flume - Insane
The last year I have been getting into electronic music more and more. This type of stuff is what I seem to be gravitating to. It is aggressive yet still remains psychedelic and relaxed (if that makes any sense). Definitly going to find more from this artist.

20. Arya Stark: Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings
I had heard aout this band and always thought without giving it a chance they would absolutely suck donkey cock. I was wrong, this song is not only amazing but the video is cool too and has Aubrey Plaza in it. Everything about the song is super simple and nothing new but it captures a mood a definitely enjoy. I will certainly check out more from this album.

I'm glad you enjoyed this! :) I actually chose their least "weird" song to put on the mixtape, so that it would be more palatable for everyone... ha!

I have had a listen to She Loves Pablo and enjoyed what I heard, I'm gonna go check them out! Thanks, Rez!

Astronomer 08-15-2013 02:14 AM

Just listened to this mix! And another great selection from all who participated :) This time I won't comment on every track, because it takes a long time and I'm sure not everyone reads these responses anyway, but here are some that stuck out for me!

Before I even looked at Rez's tracklist, when I started playing this mix, I KNEW this song would have been submitted by you, WWWP! What a cool cover, very chill. It reminds me of Triple J's Like a Version. You should check out these series of mixes, it's basically cool indie artists covering famous songs but in very different/interesting ways! Here are a few that you might enjoy, wolvey, if you ever want to check out the Like a Version mixes:

Spoiler for For WWWP:

Loved the acoustic guitar work in this track. Very nice. I drifted off towards the end though, I think I preferred the first half of the song which I thought was quite beautiful :)

This song is played ALL the time on a local radio station that I listen to over here! I couldn't believe it when I clicked play, Arya! I used to not really think much of it, but it's kinda growing on me. Good choice for the mix :)

Rush was probably an obvious choice from me, but the lyrics in that particular song really reflect how I feel these days. I'll be a bit more obscure in the future, and try to find something good (to me anyway) that no one has heard.

DL'ing Part 2 for myself atm... will report back pronto.

:yeah:

Burning Down 08-15-2013 08:35 AM

I downloaded the Zip file but is the Spotify one different? If so, someone will have to take some time to reupload that one for me as another Zip file :(

Arya Stark 08-15-2013 09:01 AM

The spotify one is the same, except one song was not available.

It's just a different way to listen to the same thing!

Okay thanks. I didn't know cause I clicked on it and still got that damn message "Spotify is currently no available in yur country". Though I just remembered that I have an add on that will mask my IP as a US or UK address lol.

11. wolverinewolfweiselpigeon: Nouvelle Vague - No One Knows
Nice and mellow, and a good bossa nova, or 'Girl From Ipanema' style cover of Queens.

Quote:

12. rostasi: Stara Rzeka - Przebudzenie Boga Wschodu
I used to take the train in to work everyday, and this would have been a nice listen for the ride. They've managed to create a very good imitation train ride sound, almost Tangeine Dream-ish.

Quote:

13. Powerstars: Killers - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine
Love the melody on this one. Although I don't usually listen to euro-style stuff this was good. I've never heard to Killers before.

Quote:

14. duga: Alpine Decline - Sleeping Gas
A bit meloncholy for my tastes, but I can appreciate the artistry here.

Quote:

15. Frownland: Sonny Sharrock - Promises Kept
Always a fan of some free style jazz. Nice piece.

Quote:

16. The Batlord: Grand Belial's Key - Vultures of Misfortune
Was kind of expecting this one. Threw me off at first, but when it kicked in, I was like "Aha! There it is". Not a fan of the growl, but yeah it kicked some serious bootay.

Quote:

17. Astronomer: Twelve Foot Ninja - Ain't That A Bitch
Never heard this band before. Nice mix of easy listening, and heavier styles. I'll have to give this one a few more spins.

Quote:

18. Vanilla: Flume - Insane
Again, not my cup-o-tea, but I appreciate the artistry.

Quote:

19. bob.: Corrections House - Hoax the System
Droning, minimalistic, kinda heavy... almost early Ministry-ish. Pretty cool.

Quote:

20. Arya Stark: Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings
Nice concept piece. I had to turn it up at the end to hear the BG.

Quote:

21. Sequoioideae: Coffins - Decapitated Crawl
Whoa. Although I'm not a doom fan, I can appreciate the... ummm... artistry? It seems this type of thing has been the proverbial "Beaten Dead Horse" for a while now. Someone give that man a cough drop.

Quote:

22. Plankton: Rush - Time Stand Still
Just reiterating what I posted earlier. Sitting with friends, had a random CD on, and it was one of those moments where everyone is talking and having fun, and I'm tinking deeply about life when this tune comes on. It fit so perfectly I figured I'd share it on the MB Mixtape.

Quote:

23. Burning Down: Let's Active - Horizon
Kind of whimsical, and shimmery. Not a bad tune, just not my thing.

This really opens up the doors for new music for me, and I appreciate you putting this together Dr Rez. Looking forward to lots more of this.

LoathsomePete 08-15-2013 11:07 AM

You should definitely check out Silent Machine (2012) by Twelve Foot Ninja, one of the real surprise albums for me from last year.

I was kind of torn with this one. I love the song, but it's kind of...racist. GBK are an outspokenly anti-Semitic band, and they used traditional Jewish music on that song, and the album, as a slap in the face, but I think they didn't quite realize what they were doing. If you use Jewish music in your song subversively, and it makes it better, then you've actually just made the Jews look better. Either way, they're a great band.

I got it yesterday and it is amazing. I feel like I can safely say if you like rock and roll you will like this band. They go from jazzy lo tempo to balls out so seamlessly, dont think I have heard a band do that so well..maybe ever.

Do you have WinZip or something that will open the .zip file from Mediafire? I have Firefox and and WinZip and I downloaded and unzipped in one shot.

You can't use the Spotify version?

I just checked and it is doing the same for me, I think it has something to do with one of the songs copyright that was detected. I will try another upload site. Give me about 30 minutes.

I am uploaded to my google drive right now.

Mediafire is kinda tricky for some. You have to either watch the commercial and enter the text afterward, or enter whats in the Capcha text image.

Maybe Google Drive or Box.net would be a better option?

If you still can't get to it, I'll send you a link in a PM to the file off my sites server.

Edit: NM, I see the good Doctor is on the case.

Been a while since I've heard this. The album is pretty good,
but I've always had a soft spot for Duran Duran. ;)

Glad you guys like it! "Sleeping Gas" and "Ain't That A Bitch" stood out to me most. I loved them.

Frownland 08-15-2013 02:37 PM

I'll be doing the same as Astronomer and just review my favourite tracks, but I'll do it for both parts of the mixtape at once.

2. Dengue Fever - Tiger Phone Card
Fun track, almost reminds me of a modern day Jefferson Airplane.

3. Killing Joke - Inside the Termite Mound
Haven't heard a Killing Joke track that I have not liked yet. I really dig the industrial side of their music especially.

6. Beats Antique - Dope Crunk
The Indian (?) influence on this track is cool as **** and it's catchy. Normally something I wouldn't listen to but this is pretty sveet.

11. Nouvelle Vague - No One Knows
This was an awesome interpretation of the QOTSA song, I like how it's entirely different while still staying respectful to the song. The singer has a beautiful voice, too.

12. Stara Rzeka - Przebudzenie Boga Wschodu
My favourite track on all of the mixtape. Very good musicianship on Stara's part in that his playing has a lot of depth. I especially love how seamlessly the genre transitions are.

16. Grand Belial's Key - Vultures of Misfortune
Well that was quite a turnaround in the beginning, one I enjoyed.

19. Corrections House - Hoax the System
I like the droney part in the beginning and how raw this track was. Good pick.

21. Coffins - Decapitated Crawl
Heaviness squared. This was an intense and over the top track, I loved it.

Other tracks were good for their genres but unfortunately they were genres that I don't listen to or often enjoy, so they didn't make my cut.

Burning Down 08-15-2013 03:37 PM

I liked it alot. I think it actually fit well right after the Rush track that is right before it. While it was not a huge standout song for me it is certainly not one I skip over listening to this. Reminds me of a lot of 80 girl bands, with that big stadium sound.

No need to be sorry, different strokes for different folks. Your track was one that I could tell was good for its genre but didn't quite appeal to me.

Probably something new that I haven't gotten to yet.
I kinda wish they were an instrumental band...and their (physical)
covers are wonderfully creative - probably really lovely as a 12X12.

Yeah, it's off their latest album Night of the Long Knives (which was just released this year). As I listened to the mixtape, I realized it worked much better in the context of the album. Listening to a song like that on its own diminishes it just a bit. I still love it, though. And the whole album for that matter. And yeah, the artwork is really nice on vinyl. I got this album and Disappearance as a gift on vinyl...that's actually how I discovered them.

Dr_Rez 08-15-2013 05:06 PM

Just so you all know the order is determined by the order in which I receive them, I do not choose anything above anything else.

Definitely recommend checking out their album, but their EPs are also really awesome so don't miss them either! So psyched that a band that I went to high school with are getting so much praise! Awesome :thumb:

bob. 08-16-2013 04:15 AM

so i listened to both parts twice while driving from reno to LA tonight.....i just wanted to say first off that this is by far the most pleasing mix of music i've heard in years.....and that i absolutely love this idea....i can honestly say that i have nothing bad to say about a single track on this and i will on sunday comment on each track

thanks to everyone...this is exactly what i needed :)

rez....are you deciding on the order after previewing or just by chance/as they come in?

being that kid in the late 80s-90s i basically made mix tapes for everyone....and order had a lot to do with it.....this really flowed perfect.....i just have to point how well Vanilla's track blended with mine as if they were on the same album.....puuuuurrrfect :)

Trollheart 08-16-2013 05:29 AM

Yes everyone may submit them for next week. As soon as one ends the next begins! It basically gives you 1 week to discuss and listen then repeats.

So everyone start sending in your new picks!

No to make things easier for everyone I will use a Random Noun Generator. It will be bolded and listed on first page. SO get Submitted you slackers!

Random Noun Generator

THE FIRST THEME WILL BE PROTEST

Mondo Bungle 08-16-2013 12:42 PM

Aww **** yeah, protest songs

Dr_Rez 08-16-2013 03:28 PM

And just in case anyone was confused this is a general theme you must follow. It can be anything with lyrics/title/subject matter involving some kind of protest. For instance anything by Rage Against the Machine would work. I want to keep the themes as loose as possible. You do not need an actual protest song used in overthrowing an oppressive government.
