The Originality Thread
 

No matter how original, everything is inspired by something, right? Here's the idea...I'm going mention a fairly original (in my opinion) album, say why I think it is original, and the next person has to post an album that they think inspired it in some way. Then another person can say what they think inspired THAT album and so on.

The album you post HAS to be older than the previous album mentioned and you HAVE to say why you think it inspired the previous album. This is to promote some discussion, folks. When I think we've hit the source (or we get bored), someone can post another more recent album and we can start the whole damn thing over again.

I'll start with one of my favorite albums from this year:

I can definitely hear some very easygoing 60's vibes going through this music, but they do it in such a quirky and original way...at least in a way that most people don't touch on these days. It's sparse but the melody is still there, as is the case with a lot of their songs. They definitely pursue things that I think many people wouldn't bother touching and they turn it into pure gold.

On first hearing that track, it reminded me somewhat of the general tone and feel of Shuggie Otis's 1974 Inspiration Information album. Never heard Unknown Mortal Orchestra before, but the light-as-a-feather vocal delivery and laidback, funky, demolike production sound very much like Shuggie to me.

After listening to the UMO song, I Googled to find out more about them and found they actually recorded a tune titled "Shuggie Otis". So perhaps they really were influenced by him. :)

I never listened to Shuggie Otis before but I have to agree with you....it definitely sounds like he influenced them a lot. I think I'm going to check out more of him as well because that was pretty good. I'm listening to Inspiration Information now, in fact...pretty good stuff. I would say UMO sounds like if a modern acid-tripping version of Shuggie.

As for who I think inspired Shuggie, I think I can definitely compare him to Sly Stone. This particular album came out 7 years before Shuggie's Inspiration Information:

While this wasn't as successful and not nearly as pop-oriented as their later album, I think the Soul inspired side of Shuggie came a lot from these guys.

Wow, this thread has really taken off.

People can post new albums to discuss...there isn't some kind of strict cut off or anything.

I love this idea, but I've been trying to think of something worthwhile to contribute. :)

Same! I'm too unfamiliar with the genres and the direction so far. I'm afraid I can't offer much yet. :)

Post an album you think is original and we can discuss it...the idea isn't that it's like Album Wars or anything.

I just ask that people respect if a current discussion is taking place.

Akphaezya - Anthology II Links From The Dead Trinity.

If you are going to mash up genres then at least be semi proficient in those genres and this band does it really well. Mixing Jazz and Metal is by no means new but balancing the sounds and still making a listenable sound with a recognisable theme makes a damn good album. It's groovy and it's heavy and that works for me.

I'm afraid I can't offer much in the way of influences as jazz and metal are far from my fortes, but god damn was this fun. I suppose some one could make the argument for Clutch, who often use a kind of groovy, riff-driven sound, but that's probably grasping for straws, so I'll avoid posting a video and creating a forced link of influences.
Man, that's some funky stuff, though. Sounds like they could've influenced Dos Cafundos.
