The metal genre is home to some of the most ambitious music in any popular music category (popular music in the academic sense).

In academia, almost every genre is just lumped into "popular music". Strange as it might seem, the academic definition doesn't really distinguish between Britney Spears and Nile. So the genre labels used go something like this: Jazz, classical/art music/serious music, folk music/traditional. Can't really remember exactly how it goes, but basically popular music is that big hodgepodge of stuff from modern times that people actually listen to.

Blues is popular music too. So is jazz. Academically, it's popular music or "art music". In other words, Classical and then everything else, folk genres. It's incredibly pretentious, especially since classical music isn't all that great, but that's just how it is.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.
