Eras & Genres of Music

I'm just curious but do any of you stick to certain genres or eras, like a bit closed minded? Because I've noticed a lot of people won't give other types of music or music from past eras a chance. They seem to find it... well... crap

but I myself tend to like any sort of genre or year of music that keeps me happy and that I can enjoy. So what's your thoughts on this?

I personally listen to pretty much everything although I tend to find certain patterns in what I enjoy listening to most. I couldn't just dismiss artists based on their era or genre because I'd feel like I could be missing out on something.

If people tend to appreciate certain eras or genres more that's fine by me. Everyone has certain kinds of music they're more drawn to and it's all very subjective, some people might simply enjoy that more. I only really dislike it when people get condescending or snobby because it's not something within their comfort zone.

I do tend to stick mostly to the genres I enjoy, but that's not to say I wouldn't step outside if I heard something I liked. My taste is slightly varied: rock, heavy metal, AOR, prog rock/metal, classical, bit of country, little folk, bit of pop, instrumental/ambient, some small easy listening, some Irish trad. But though I know people love it here, jazz is one genre I can't get into. Nor is death metal or reggae really. Doesn't mean I think those genres are crap, just that they're not, at the moment, for me.

I guess it would all depend on how deep you actually want to dig into a particular era or genre of music. I don't believe that most people are closed minded at discovering new music they might like, but if its not your cup of tea, why would you want to bother?
It could take a life time to become an authority concerning the music and history of a particular artist or band period, for that matter. Your talking about a very broad range of different music styles with a very long history here. If your just an average music enthusiast, unlike Eddie Trunk for instance, or a music critic that writes reviews and articles for a major magazine/website, why would you want to peruse something musical that your not really interested in the first place?

I follow one and only one rule. I stick to *melodic* music. I do like both pop music and classic rock music - as long as it has a melody and is not just noise.
(I hate rap and industrial).
