I think thats a very good point Urban.

I think it all depends who you're talking to, what you're saying, and why you're doing it.

I would try to expand someones comfort zone, if they had identified themselves as being passionate about music. I would do that mainly because I wanted them to listen to something I really hoped they would like.

Then again, if they refused to do that and weren't interested in doing that, I wouldn't put them down for that.

On a similar note, something that bugs me that I've noticed occasionally around here is people who judge other people's motives behind saying they like something. For example, claiming someone is saying they like something just to appear cool or different. Such a silly presumption to make. If someone tells me they like something, I assume that's because they do in fact like it. I'm not going to second guess their reasons for liking what they like.
Yeah I see that too. Another irk is when others devalue opinions about an unrelated music subject or band according to negative opinions of the person's music taste. That's just... sad.

I wasn't judging your music taste, or you! I'm offended that you would think I would do something so unreasonable or unfair.

I just called you a liar.

In other news, I'm really glad this thread is getting so much activity.
I was really wondering what people were thinking and if they REALLY judge others based on their tastes in music! I feel like it's really immature to do so, the times I felt most judged was in high school, and people don't really do that anymore. I'm realizing this the older I get.

Like tore mentioned earlier, I think everybody judges everybody on various factors and it is something we do without realising. You will judge others on the way they look, speak, clothes they wear, language they use... and probably the music they listen to. Judging others is part of our nature. But there is a difference between judging and criticising. I think we are losing the meaning of the term "judge" here. The verb judge is defined as, "Form an opinion or conclusion about." This is not necessarily a negative thing. I think it is human nature to form opinions (i.e. "judge") others based on what is presented to us. But to criticise or put them down them based on their music taste, well that is something different.

I think it probably does become less common as you get older, but it does still happen.
