To be completely honest, I haven't really seen much discrimination or judgement on this forum regarding other's music tastes, and I think I can say the same for "real life" as well. Sometimes I may not agree with my friends' tastes in music, and we may not share the same musical opinions, but this doesn't mean I'm going to judge or criticise them for it. If there is any criticism involved, it's usually tongue-in-cheek. I'd say the same generally occurs on MB from what I've seen, most criticising and judging is based on topics other than music...

You weren't being bullied. You asked a question so I answered it with a 'No'.

You would never have been able to tell.
I'm a pop and hip hop girl.

So to say that my personality traits are like those that listen to pop and hip hop is super weird to me.
You don't like Kreator. Don't lie to all the nice people.

I judge people all the time on how they talk, dress themselves, mannerisms, what car they drive, what cell phone they have, etc. I also judge people by the music they listen to. We all do, it happens automatically.

But in general I try not to put people down over stuff like that because that's just douchy behaviour.

There's a world of difference between someone criticising someones taste in music and judging someone's taste in music.

Saying to someone 'You should try listening to something other than Slipknot' is nothing like saying 'You're an idiot because you only listen to Slipknot'

Certainly you can share a negative opinion with someone while still being respectful.

Still, I seldom comment on others tastes. That's their business. Someone who listens to Slipknot obviously gets enjoyment from listening to Slipknot and if that works out for them, what's the value in me telling them they should find their enjoyment elsewhere? If they get motivated to move on from Slipknot, they will do that without my input. If they're not motivated, they should probably stick to it.

This is true but this is a discussion forum.
If you think slipknot are the best band in the world that's great, but if you join the forum and start a thread to tell everybody else this that means you're asking for my opinion of it.

I also think there's a world of difference between judging someone in your head and committing it to a post. I mean, as people here have said, everyone judges everyone else, if only mentally. You hear someone listens to a wide variety of music you couldn't even begin to listen to and you think wow, or on the other side you come across someone who refuses to listen to anything other than one genre or artiste and you also think wow, but in a more negative way. Nobody can stop you thinking. It's when you start posting about it and criticising that person for their music tastes that I believe it becomes wrong.

I mean, my sister is very set in her ways. She knows the albums she likes by her favourite bands and will not listen to anything else. It's an entrenched opinion but I would never slag her off for it -- well I would, because we're that comfortable with each other, but I would never allow anyone else to.

Everyone's entitled to listen to what they want to. It's when others try to claim that what you're listening to isn't broad enough or acceptable, and you should be listening to THIS that I would certainly begin to take offence.

But that could also be taken as enthusiasm on the other persons part for a record they've heard and wanting others to hear it.

A couple of members here would constantly tell me to listen to country and would send me recommendation and tease me about how they knew I had no interest in it and wouldn't listen to them. So you could imagine how shocked they were when I told them that I'd taken up one of their recommendations and listened to Gilded Palace Of Sin by The Flying Burrito Bros. and loved that album.

It's like when I teased you about pushing you out of your comfort zone, I wasn't saying that to be a dick or anything like that it was out of a genuine interest and respect for your opinion to hear what you thought of some albums that have been a part of my life for something like 2 decades.
