Having my musical tastes judged (and found wanting) the first time I joined here was what eventually led to my leaving the site in a huff, sniffling of things like "elitism" and "snobbishness". When I came back I adopted a "**** it I like it and if you don't then **** you you ain't gonna stop me listening to it" attitude, and since then I've been pretty fine. I still get criticisms ("you're stuck in a prog world", "you won't listen to extreme metal" or the ultimate "You don't seriously listen to David Soul, do you?" comment from my good friend) but I know most of these people now and I take it as it's intended, as a well-meaning kick up the arse to get me to explore other genres. Unfortunately I'm a little old to change now but you never know. Trouble is that I already have so much to listen to I'm unlikely to go searching for new genres.

But personally I don't criticise anyone's taste: Powerstars is a Beatles fanatic. Not me, don't like em. Janszoon loves jazz, Vanilla electronica, Goofle every single genre ever invented and some we still don't even know about. That's cool. No problem. But I'd rather not be pushed into something like "you really need to hear this band" or worse, "Why aren't you listening to this?" I'll listen to what I want to thanks, and if someone wants to (silently) criticise me abotu it that's fine, but if they post or PM and start going on at me for not being "adventurous enough", that's where the line gets crossed and I get upset.

Live, and listen, and let live, I say.

So short answer, no: I don't think it's right, or fair, for anyone to criticise musical tastes. It's like those people who say "Oh you'll love this!" How do they know? I might hate it, be it food, music or a film. Unless they know me, and know my tastes, who are they to be an authority on me?

On a similar note, something that bugs me that I've noticed occasionally around here is people who judge other people's motives behind saying they like something. For example, claiming someone is saying they like something just to appear cool or different. Such a silly presumption to make. If someone tells me they like something, I assume that's because they do in fact like it. I'm not going to second guess their reasons for liking what they like.
Yeah, but you're only saying that to be cool.

I don't really "judge" people for their taste, but I do anyway. Not critically or seriously, just generally. Like, if you listen to country, Seether-esque metal, and pop, I'm going to think you're conventional and kind of boring. If you're interested, this here is a study on a link between music and the people that listen to it.

My only reservation with that study would be that the personality characteristics are self-assessed.

I feel like it's so hard to judge people. I remember switching some music back and forth with Mojo and he found out I used to listen to like this really old metal band.
You would never have been able to tell.
I'm a pop and hip hop girl.

So to say that my personality traits are like those that listen to pop and hip hop is super weird to me.

That's what I thought but then someone else accused him of being mean to me, followed by the next saying he condones bullying... (got me rethinking)
Maybe I am confused. What else is new, but you yourself said I was picked on although you never said what that was pertaining to. Was it the mod recommendation thread? That was sicker...
