Primarily on the strength of The Hurting, I would say Tears For Fears. I even loved their initial band The Graduate. The Graduate was more leaning towards stuff similar to The Jam/Madness, but TFF hit gold with The Hurting. One of my favorite early 80's synth bands with gloomy lyrics and excellent harmony and melodies. I didn't necessarily like their later output, but I always fall back to that album.
