Bands/Musicians From The Area You Live In?

what are some awesome bands from around the area that you currently live in (or somewhere you'd call home)

I live near Athens, Georgia and we've contributed some great bands such as

REM
The B52's
The Whigs
Reptar
Widespread Panic (I don't care for them though)
Danger Mouse (who produced albums for bands such as gorillaz, the black keys, and gnarls barkley)
Modern Skirts
Neutral Milk Hotel
Far From California (of course haha)

plus Bobby Prince the guy who created the soundtracks and noise effects for games such as Wolfenstein and DOOM

Paedantic Basterd 05-30-2013 05:26 PM

Athens has also produced Of Montreal. And probably half of the Elephant 6 roster.

Far From California 05-30-2013 05:30 PM

Yea I've heard of them, but I haven't given them a listen just yet

Paedantic Basterd 05-30-2013 05:42 PM

I added to your list because there isn't a single remarkable artist from my area.

Sequoioideae 05-30-2013 05:48 PM

I could name a few others, but these are what I came up with immediately. Not a bad roster, if you ask me.

Burning Down 05-30-2013 06:08 PM

Well I'm from Toronto so there are a lot of great bands and singers from the whole area. Rush, Barenaked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, The Band (except for Levon Helm of course)... lots of great local bands too.

Goofle 05-30-2013 06:45 PM

The Buzzcocks were formed in Bolton so yeah, go Bolton.

Also Pylon.

Hey Athens don't forget Guadalcanal Diary.

Seattle has much to boast, including (but not limited to) -

Heart
Eddie Vedder
Bing Crosby
Jimi Hendrix
Duff McKagan (Guns n' Roses)
Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue)
Nirvana
Soundgarden
Harvey Danger
Foo Fighters

I know there's hundreds more, but I'm not really well educated yet in Seattleite culture.

Dude, let's not forget Lipps, Inc., Marcy Playground, and the Trashmen ("Surfin' Bird"!). Minnesota hasn't got a lot to brag about.

anathematized_one 06-01-2013 02:19 AM

Well, I used to live in Atlanta and for a while I was in Jenovah and we were awesome, but we were still a "local" band so that probably doesn't count..

At the moment, I live in the deep south of Alabama and the only good bands out of here are local (and they're all solo projects of either me or this other guy who is far better than I am).

I don't think there were even any notable ones from this whole corner at any point in time or were even born here and later became something great after escaping the cultural wasteland this place is.

Sure it does. Just the fact that both Husker Du and the Replacements are from there is more than enough for some serious cred with me.

I mean Prince was one of the main stars of the 1980s. That is a big deal dealing that he is not predictable states but of Minnesota of all places. Best part is that Prince has always lived and remained in Minnesota despite his fame.

Burning Down 06-02-2013 03:22 PM

Wow, a whole lot of artists can call Seattle their hometown. Must be something in the water, lol.

Chicago.

There are others, but this one was the easiest to remember.

Ha...funny you say that, because a lot of place name bands are not from the places they imply they're from in their band's name. for instance:
America - London, oF Montreal - Athens, Brazilian Girls - NYC, and none of them no where near where they say they're from. And I'm from Barcelona are not from Barcelona, Spain as you might think... they're from Jönköping, Sweden for goodness sakes. You know for a fact they could had easily called themselves "I'm from Jönköping" if they wanted to, but oh no that would be too logical. And when you think about it, I wonder how many tourist walk the streets of Catalonia looking for the band "I'm from Barcelona" and never find them because they 1,5oo miles off course.

HazelRose 06-04-2013 05:05 AM

Adam & the Ants

I now live in what is classed as a middle class town and have done for over 20 years and the music scene is pretty crap but Jaz Coleman from Killing Joke was born around 5 mins away from where I live. The Skunk Anansie guitarist lived and grew up in the same area and of course Brian Jones from the stones lived and grew up here (his grave is in the same cemetery as my wife - no morbidity here btw) and one Gustav Holst was born here too.

An ex member of Napalm Death lives here too and I worked with him for a couple of years.

Janszoon 06-04-2013 08:59 PM

Philly has had some crap over the years, like Hall & Oates, Cinderella, and Boyz II Men, but we've also given the world The Roots, Ween, The Dead Milkmen, Man Man, John Coltrane, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Jill Scott, Chiddy Bang, Kurt Vile, The Walkmen, Will Smith, and American Bandstand.

These guys are like from 2 or 3 miles away from where I reside here in southeastern Ohio. I remember when their music equipment was in pawn half the time after the drug and alcohol binges, hehe.
They've accomplished quite a bit of attention during the last year or so. Currently touring the states and promoting the release of a new album.

I am personally not a real big fan of their music to be honest. There are a few local metal bands I like better.
