i would class myself as an average singer. i haven't had any lessons but have been singing for a long time. i also play the guitar and i think an instrument helps with getting the key and note or chord. i try to sing the chord like a G or A and concentrate on sounding like the chord im playing. then you can learn to sing that note or chord without an instrument. you hear a song on the radio and you can tell what key it is in.
this to me is what singing is everyone's voice is different some raspy others squeaky but its learning to sing the tune by learning to sing the notes. bob dylans voice was unusual but he knew how to hold a note. i know there is breathing and singing from the diaphragm etc but 3/4 of it is making your voice which is your instrument sound like the notes imo. there is pitch and tone and control but that will come. i find that recording my voice and hearing it back helps as you begin to identify where you went off tune or flat or pitchy. just like a guitar out of tune you can hear your voice when it goes out and can work on that. i find looking on YouTube for some singing lessons helps a bit to. like i say im no expert but i do know how to sing in tune.
