If you're calling yourself a "nu grunge" band, I would worry less about playing "well" and just pound every single song as hard as you can until ears bleed and a moshpit destroys the venue. Be a little bit dangerous. Be animalistic. Scare them, it will make them remember you... which is what you want, obviously.
Best of luck to you.

Play for 10 minutes & incite a riot.

This is some solid advice. Jerk off onstage while looking your audience in the eye and give them something that they will remember you by. Then play your set. Create a reputation for yourselves.
It worked well for Enya. Or was it The Jesus and Mary Chain.

When they tried to shut us down, the trumpet player jumped off the stage after yelling something at the cop, ran through the crowd with the cop in chase, and everyone in the crowd were getting to that tipping point. They cut the power, and our singer just kept on with the lyrics, screaming into the crowd. I kept on playing my drums. After it was all said and done, the biggest blow to the event people was that we won first prize. The show had a big gift certificate to a local music shop, based on the audience votes for the best band, and they had to give it to us. We were by far the worst. But we almost started a riot. At least, some semblance of one. The mob liked it.

We split it up between the bandmembers, but concentrated on what needed upgrading the most. My drums got all new heads, extra sticks, etc. Guitarist got new strings, some pedals if I recall correctly. Think there was a mic or two purchased. Just various different equipment for the band.
