Satan Songs
Not sure that this warrants it's own thread, but I'm posting this here rather than in a recommendations thread in favor of greater visibility. If the mod-squad decides to relocate it, so it goes.
I'm doing a presentation for one of my classes in which I discuss the components of the contemporary mythology of the Satan character as found in various forms of media - exorcism movies, political cartoons, church sermons, works of fiction, and, as I'm sure you saw coming, in music. If you would all be so kind as to post some of your favorite diabolical ditties, tunes of the tempter, anthems of the antichrist, ballads of Beelzebub, and lullabies of Lucifer, I would greatly appreciate it. |
It's usually Satan On The Beach by these guys, but since there's no Youtube vid, I will post this one:

Alrighty my dear, here is some that I thought of:
Woe to You Oh Earth and Sea for the Devil sends the beast with wrath because he knows the time is short Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number its number is six hundred and sixty six. I lived alone my mind was blank I needed time to think to get the memories from my mind What did I see? Could I believe? That what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy Just what I saw in my old dreams were they reflections of my warped mind staring back at me? 'Cause in my dreams it's always there the evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair Night was black was no use holding back 'Cause I just had to see was someone watching me In the mist dark figures move and twist was all this for real or just some kind of hell 6-6-6 the Number of the Beast Hell and fire was spawned to be released Torches blazed and sacred chants were phrased as they start to cry hands held to the sky In the night the fires are burning bright the ritual has begun Satan's work is done 6-6-6 the Number of the Beast Sacrifice is going on tonight This can't go on I must inform the law Can this still be real or just some crazy dream? but I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes seem to mesmerise...can't avoid their eyes 6-6-6 the Number of the Beast 6-6-6 the one for you and me I'm coming back I will return And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn I'll have the fire I'll have the force I'll have the power to make my evil take its course |
here's an interesting one from Chris de Burgh (yeah I know ) in which God and the Devil play poker for the souls of the dead...

How the hell (pun intended) hasn't anybody posted Slayer?

The album is actually really, really good. It's earnest and heartfelt. The best songs aren't explicitly about Satan, tho.... |

Here's some devil stuff made by a man who actually believes in and was once obsessed with Satan, Daniel Johnston:
Spoiler for more devil songs by Johnston:
And one, not specifically about Satan I guess, from another famous Texan who experienced a schizophrenic break and became obsessed with creatures from Hell, Roky Erickson: |

Thank you all so much, these are exactly the kinds of songs I was looking for. You ****ers froze my computer having posted so many videos but I couldn't be more pleased.
|
There are some major omissions.
motley crue - shout at the devil - YouTube Black Sabbath Black Sabbath - YouTube Black Sabbath-N. I. B. - YouTube "Mr. Crowley" also is vaguely about Satanism Ozzy Osbourne - Mr. Crowley - YouTube |
Murder By Death "The Devil in Mexico" Morrissey "Satan Rejected My Soul" Ella Fitzgerald "Get Thee Behind Me Satan" Roky Erickson and The Aliens "Don't Shake Me Lucifer" |
Root - Píseň pro Satana
Tsjuder - Kill for Satan Belketre - Hate So many possibilities. |
It's not nearly as dark as the other examples in this thread, but in terms of an interesting presentation of Satan... I think this is pretty good. Basically, a girl falls in love and eventually realizes it is Satan (played by the RZA in this song). It makes Satan out to be a somewhat sympathetic character without going down the road of endorsing Satanism necessarily, which I think is pretty unique.

Also, there's a very old song, showtune maybe, called "Get Thee Behind Me Satan."

What gives with this video anyway? It's so fake, like some kind of cartoon!!! I've heard on good authority that studio musicians are actually playing the song and Archie, Veronica & Betty are merely lip syncing the song. They can't fool me.. they don't even have any microphone or amplifiers!
Notice how the alleged drummer, Jughead begins the song playing on drum kit with only a tom-tom and a bass drum... then all of a sudden at around 48 seconds a cymbal magically appears, then the cymbal goes away in the next shot! Why is he wearing a crown? He needs to wipe that smug little smile off his face and lose that attitude! |
Figured I'd add some country/bluegrass variety to the equation
|
The song itself isn't about Satan but I can't help but crack a smile every time I hear the intro
|
Anton LaVey - Satan Takes A Holliday
|
|
I just noticed that nobody posted this song. I figured it would have been by now.
|
Am I ****ing blind or did seriously no one remember this of all things???
|
|
Hell Bound Train - Savoy Brown
|
*cough*
|
Daniel Johnston - Don't Play Cards With Satan |
