I don't think that the biggest problem is the music industry, per se, as in the record companies, and I really don't have any issues with a band or an album being highly commercialized. If it's accessible to a huge demographic then it makes all the sense in the world to promote it as such. A lot of the time if an album has a huge budget behind it it will be a high quality recording, which is something that I always factor into whether or not I like an album. If you like something that's flavor of the month, that's fine. Music doesn't have to be obscure, or inaccessible to be good. I may, however, judge you a little bit if the extent of your music appreciation is covered by what's served to you by mainstream media.
I have far more issues with the way that music is distributed today. Musicians aren't getting paid what they should for their work. Apple has done more to keep money out of the pockets of musicians than any huge corporate record company. |

It basically means that the extent of your appreciation is based on what's forced upon you, or what you hear when you turn the radio on. I'll respect you more if you're doing something to actively expand your musical pallete.
