I understand that both of those styles were experimenting with alternative tonalities, but to me, they just end up sounding like a UFO crashing into a junk yard.
At least Punk had a good excuse: They didn't practice because it was too 'establishment'...... |

I realize that there is some jazz that's dissonant and challenging to listen to (a lot of which I enjoy) but the fact that you appear to be describing bebop that way is bizarre to me. Bebop is pure rhythm and melody, the furthest thing from what you're describing.

That would be called a "cymbal" - it's part of the drum set.
They only did that for like six months then stopped. You know it's been 37 years since they did that.
