That was my opinion. I am not saying that people agree with it. I have heard songs from Nirvana and Pearl Jam and I think Pearl Jam is better than Nirvana and Alice in Chains. The late lead singer of AIC was a genius though.

Hmm I'm a bit late to this thread but after reading through most of the pages I might as well give my two cents worth of opinion. The question was whether or not you like Nirvana. Okay then, although pretty much all of my friends in high school either listened to & were fans of the band, I was always pretty indifferent to the music. Ignoring genre labels and just going with popular rock bands in the 90s, well yeah, I'd rather listen to Nirvana than Pearl Jam. I liked the Smashing Pumpkins better. Alice in Chains I could never get into. I was a big fan of Blur and Oasis. I think what I'm trying to get at is, even though I was never really into Nirvana's music, I can appreciate it for what it is and that they produced some of the best rock music of the 90s. Albums like Nevermind and In Utero still being popular today just proves that the music still stands up and has had a lasting cultural impact. In middle/high school I had a hard time listening to anything labeled 'grunge' just because it was a totally different, heavier, darker sound than the rock music I was familiar with. But looking back at Nirvana's music now and listening to it...well, it isn't for everyone, but I don't think you can ignore they were one of - or possibly the - most important rock band of the 90s.
Even if you aren't a fan, Whatever is a pretty f***ing great album. |

If yer a fan of Blur and Oasis, check out (if you haven't already) what led up to that vein of really great Brit Rock... My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Ride - Nowhere the Stone Roses - the Stone Roses ...to name just a few. There's a long line of really good music having to do with all that, which began way back with the Velvet Underground. Jesus and Mary Chain, Lush, Cocteau Twins, the Chameleons...all really great stuff. -Intrigue in Ghost Jam |

Second Coming is garbage. There's this crazy intersection of it all...between Joy Division/New Order, the Chameleons, Bauhaus, etc that all led to a sort of "forget the mids" sound, which left front vocals and lead guitars in the background while heavy rhythm and distortion were at the forefront. A kind of "parenthetical" sound that I love to no end. :D A lot of folks called that "Shoegaze"...but I think it went way beyond what the British critics were calling it and manifests itself to this day. 2. "There's a long line of really good music" before the Velvet Underground. There is a prevalent notion that only one band started good music. Whether it is The Beatles or VU or the Pixies or Nirvana or Metallica or Lady Gaga. I don't hate any of those bands, and I steer clear of Metallica and Lady Gaga for practical purposes. I don't know much about who influenced the Velvet Underground. I guess they were influenced by the Folk and Pop and advantgarde scenes or whatever. Nico met up with Brian Jones, Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison, she was porbably influenced by the latter more. Jonesy was into sex drugs and Rock and Roll and he gave up the latter in pursuit of the first two. Everybody talks Bob Dylan and yet there isn't enough said about the man. Nico bore the brunt of the talent in VU. Lou Reed came in a close second. I'm half way with Pursuingchange where I question the idols people put on pedestals, however I don't see the need to topple people's idols. If they worship these bands llike VU or Nirvana and think they are the cause of everything in music than that's their opinion; that's them. It's all perspective, it's pretty close to Einstein's Theory of Relativity. If a person thinks their favourite band is more massive than other bands then that band will wrap their space-time of musical taste. I guess because I'm not all into one genre I look at things differently. |
