Thank you SO much for taking the time to lay out that information. Most appreciated.

I'm simply not very savvy regarding cpu hardware, that's all.

I really do appreciate all the info and advice. The relevant purchases have been made and I should be retrieving my music within a week.

Let us know how you get on. Hope it all comes together for you.

Incidentally, I really like the way you keep qualifying your username, based on the circumstances --- "Grateful ghost jam, stoned ghost jam" etc. Very individual and a nice character trait.

Also, the SATA cables on the PC are usually blue, just so you know, and narrower than the IDE ones...
That would really depend on whether he's planning on getting a laptop or a desktop, and whether the hard drive he's talking about is 2.5 or 3.5. You can simply connect a 2.5 or 3.5 drive to the motherboard's SATA or IDE connectors, provided it's a desktop, bu you can't do the same if it's a laptop.
Thus, the simplest solution is to pay a couple dollars for an enclosure that uses USB, which interfaces with either desktop or laptop, and also provides you with removable, mobile storage regardless of what kind of computer you have.

Also, SATA cables aren't usually blue. They're usually red or black. I don't know where you're getting this information from, nor would I suggest someone determining the type of cable based on its color and width.
You determine the interface by the connector itself. They're sorta built to only fit one type of interface, therefore it's pretty easy to do a physical comparison.

Take your point about laptops: no way to hook up a drive externally without the enclosure in that case. Makes sense.

As for the SATA cables, well mine are blue so I just assumed that was the way they all were, a way to quickly differentiate them from the IDE. Guess I'm wrong then...

I think I may have a question for you in the main computer support thread in a bit, if that's ok?
