^Nice on the J Dilla!

I can see Dark Side as one big song but not the Wall. The Wall has always felt like a big bloated mess to me, granted, it's a big bloated mess with a lot of great moments in between. ("Run Like Hell, Goodbye Blue Sky, Hey You, In The Flesh, Mother, Comfortably Numb" etc)

'Money' sort of ruins the flow of Dark Side imo. But I can see what Ziggy is saying.

I thought The Wall, especially the first disc, flowed nicely.

Well, it has been around 2 years since I heard the Wall and I was pretty young when I was big into it. Maybe my opinion on it has changed. I never thought "Money" particularly ruined the flow, although it definitely stuck out in the tracks as being the most radio-friendly and upbeat.

I think we all loved The Wall as kids just because of ABITW Part 2. I used to feel so rebellious writing the lyrics on my school work....

Did you hear about the Donuts box set? I think it'd annoy the hell out of you :)

Haha, yeah I've heard about it. And you're right, it would annoy me. :p: I'd still like to have it for collection purposes though. :D

I mostly buy lofi metal releases and for those my preferred format is the cassette. The initial cost of purchasing is lower than CDs & significantly lower than vinyl, and because they're produced in limited runs they can increase in value as well. The sound quality is imperfect and degrades with time - but when the music is (genuinely) lofi, I don't see it as too big of a deal.

As far as recent fantastic deals, I got Proclamation's "Messiah of Darkness & Impurity" for $5, which is cool 'cuz I could sell it for $50.

Just been offered the following vinyls from a guy I messaged on Ebay:

The Velvet Underground & Nico
Led Zeppelin 1, 2, 4, Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy
Black Sabbath - Mater of Reality & Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Pink Floyd - DSOTM
The Who - Who's Next

£20 for all of them, they're all in good condition and are originals bought when they were released. I'm guessing I should bite his hand off?

Hell yeah!

There's something about buying a new record, coming home with it, and putting it on the needle. You give it your full attention, no distractions, it feels like a ritual to me almost. Even when I get them in the mail, I still do the same thing. I really do prefer getting one at a time though, it gives me the feeling that I don't have worry about them piling up in my room, potentially not even being listened to. Well, that and I don't like having to worry about more than one thing at a time.

From what I experienced with CD's, it's a bit different, a bit more involved, more anticipation in hearing the sound coming from within the groves. I don't get the same feeling with CD's that I do with vinyl, after I'm done ripping a CD in a loseless format, it becomes an object that takes up space.

^So you don't bring the CDs into the car?

Metroy 05-21-2013 02:04 PM

I collect vinyl simply for the wonderful artwork. I don't really believe in the whole "Vinyl sounds warmer than CDs" argument. If you want flawless sound, download in FLAC.

I used to be an avid collector of both vinyl and cds and I've got an entire bedroom devoted to storing my albums. When I moved into a small condo, a year and a half ago, I stopped buying vinyl and cds both. I've run out of storage space. I'm slowly selling off my music collection on half.com.

I'm only purchasing digital music these days. I have a great wireless speaker system connected to my computer and a good digital software to organize and maintain my files. MP3 albums may not have any resale value but I belong to a music service where I can legally purchase drm-free MP3 albums at prices between 50 cents and $2.

I just bought my first vinyl album in over 20 years. I was at a store looking for an album (CD - from the 70's) and they were out and told me it was out of print. I stopped at another store and found it on vinyl. Sure enough when I got home I found that I could have bought the CD on Amazon. On top of that my turntable choose that moment to develope a speed control issue. (it has happened before - I have to open it up and spray a contact cleaner on some of the innerds)
The best thing about vinyl is that it is 10 times easier (than a CD) to get the wrapper off it.

OldManWinter 05-26-2013 10:46 AM

I've wanted to start collecting vinyls, but due to the exclusivity (not every band can afford or bothers to put vinyls of their records out) I've stuck to digital download and CDs.

Im a sucker (literally) for colored vinyl. Just picked up Husker Du Candy apple grey on grey vinyl. I love vinyl but having 2 cats its almost impossible for it to be clean when I try to play it so its not about sound quality really. Although on a good system I think it is superior to CD. I still buy most stuff on CD and only "special" stuff on vinyl.

taffboy 04-25-2014 10:20 AM

CD for me Been a old gitt tried both love the clarity of the CD.

When that album goes missing, I wasn't the one who stole it ;)

I love vinyl, but don't listen to it exclusively. I guess you could count me amongst the people who only buy it if it's an artist I feel the need to have a complete collection of, or if it's something I don't think I'd find again easily. Luckily I have awesome friends who are great at gift giving too.

DoctorRadio 03-03-2016 05:05 AM

I collected vinyl for over 40 years, as a DJ in clubs, and on radio mainly. My library got to over 40,000 singles and over 10,000 albums, plus 7,000 CDs, but I sold almost everything last year as I have got all I need digitally now, which is easier to keep track of, catalogue, find stuff, and my wife doesn't have to lift when we move house! I know I have lost the beauty of those labels and the sleeves, but its the music that matters. People will always collect recordings of all types, but its very much a niche market now.

DoctorRadio 03-03-2016 05:11 AM

Because they are analogue, they keep on playing even when they get worn out, or damaged. Digital stuff like CDs just jumps skips and then stops working completely. Vinyl, like analog radio just deteriorates. And vinyl labels and sleeves can be things of great beauty.

Stephen 03-03-2016 05:22 AM

They get pretty unplayable when the needle takes a flying leap off a warp or when a deep scratch gets you stuck in a loop.
