Songs for Headphones
At work Monday, a girl was asking me for ideas for a gift for her girlfriend. She said she already got her a surround sound system, that her girlfriend is really into music, and something in that vein would be the kind of thing she wanted to get her. I suggested that if her girlfriend didn't have any good ones already, some quality cans would be a good investment. I pimped AKG, of course, because I'm an AKG fan girl through and through, and she dismissed it with, "She already has good headphones; she has iPod earbuds."
Almost lost my mind. I promise, also that there's a point to that story. It really got me thinking; without a nice set of headphones, there are so many songs I'd never have really been able to appreciate on that special level that I do today, having heard them as they were meant to be heard, seemingly born anew once listened to with solid 'phones. Which songs are your go-to tracks when you really want some nice, pleasant, headphone listening? Which tracks were completely seen in a different light with your headphones? Which albums, even, have been unparalleled journeys with a set of cans on your ears? |
I like this topic, I am a headphone collector.
I am sure that the versions below are all in the worst quality imaginable. Spoiler for Lots o' Youtube Videos:

This is how we do by 50 cent
It has a strong base with good headphones :p: |
While not their best Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon is exceptional on head phones. PF in general was made for headphones.

Ambient artists like Gas and Stars Of The Lid demand headphones for proper listening and full emotional impact.
Gas - Untitled #4 - YouTube Stars of the Lid - Even If You're Never Awake (Deuxième) - YouTube |
Best one for me is Slowdive's Just For a Day album. Here's a nice track from it.
Slowdive - Catch The Breeze - YouTube My Bloody Valentine is another favorite for me on headphones as well. I like listening to shoegaze bands like this just because the layered sounds combined with quality headphones can make for a very surreal listening experience. Kinda like you're floating in the music, for lack of a better way of putting it. Oh and I agree with the Pink Floyd comment too - DSOTM sounds amazing. |
