Best opening songs?
Nothing tingles my balls more than a great opening song to set an album off.
|
Star Baby- The Guess Who - YouTube That sudden start always managed to get me excited. A real upper. Radiohead - 2+2=5 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsJ14k0D4kw Cream, Strange Brew - YouTube Of course I have to include: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T5fqLBhZgo |
One of the most powerful, gorgeous, epic pieces of music I've ever heard. I still love it now as much as I did eight years ago. Kicks off their debut album with a psychedelic, hazy, trippy kick and vocals that, when experienced live as a set opener, nearly took the roof off the venue. Happy memories. |
Surely one of the most powerful, epic starts to a rock album?
|
I have never heard an album start with a more brutally aggressive song that this one
Can't really think of another album opener that truly encapsulates the mood and feel of its subsequent album better than this song. |
Not only is the first track on Process of Elimination by Len Tch'e, "The Fist of Leng Tch'e", a powerful slap of intensity and a perfect way to start the album, but the way the song starts is the perfect intro to the intro song.

PanterA - The Great Southern Trendkill - YouTube But I couldn't put out the Rolling Stones' great opening tracks like: Beggars Banquet's "Sympathy for the Devil", Let It Bleed's "Gimme Shelter", Sticky Fingers' "Brown Sugar", Exile on Main Street's "Rocks Off", and my favorite opening song Tattoo You's "Start Me Up". |
The Birthday Party lays down the law for Prayers on Fire with this manic assault. "Start"-ing off Revolver sharp and solid. Let It Bleed started off with a perfect way to sum up 1969. ...but this did it better! |

Amazing opening track to The Sword's Gods of the Earth:
|
For the UK Release (and several others) ...and for the US release. Either way, you can't go wrong. |
For those looking for more Metal.

Radiohead are very good at opening and closing tracks. For example, 'Hail to the Thief' starts with "2+2=5" and ends with "A Wolf at the Door". |

A great taster to the delights contained therein. Even the song title works perfectly and yes I prefer Isn't Anything to Loveless any day of the week. Not that I haven't mentioned it before! Say no more regarding Metal. Still holds up as a great Dance tune. Ditto. Not just a great opening track but one the greatest songs ever to come out of this country. Opening your album with probably your greatest ever song at 18 mins long is a huge gamble but it works and then some. **** the Beatles, this is when British music changed forever. |

If I was a boxer or MMA fighter this would definitely be my entry music. Edited to get that double bass kick in of course! |
I bet Only Shallow was a nice introduction when Loveless came out.
What about NIN's Hyperpower? It's amazing, you think the album's gonna be a masterpiece then.. |

First, the good news, at least this was the opener for the US edition. Now, the ultra bad. The original opener, the original version of Astronomy Domine, was whacked off the American versions of the album all together for a long time, both in it's Tower release and even the US edition of A Nice Pair which substituted the original for the Ummagumma live version. For years, Stateside fans had to rely on a good Import bin for the full version of the album. The odd thing was that Tower had something of a major interest in See Emily Play, which was released I think about THREE times as a single, two as a regular release in '67 and, going from my memory after reading the Pink Floyd Archives - please correct if wrong, one DJ Promo only release in 1968, just when Syd was out of the band. |
I don't know how many Wilco fans are here, but I realized last night that they tend to start their albums off pretty well.

Phish - "Rift"
This song really beautifully sets up the entire album to follow. It showcases all four members wonderfully, sets a perfect mood, and the piano and guitar solos are absolutely fantastic. Jethro Tull - Aqualung This is a pretty epic opening track. It opens the album flawlessly, preparing the listener for the rest of the disc, and works as a standalone track as well. I absolutely adore the different movements within the song. It's a thoroughly interesting and entertaining listen from beginning to end. I was going to include something else, but I'd probably lose at least a million cool points (and I don't even have that many to begin with) by mentioning it. Track from an album I completely wore out in my youth. |
U2: Where The Streets Have No Name - YouTube It was a deliberate opening track pick by the band, and it sets off The Joshua Tree very nicely. (Although I personally don't rate the song as great.) By the way, I just noticed that the official video has an extended intro that I've never seen on TV. |
From Scott 2, 1968. |

Well, because I really liked the FFX soundtrack as well as the game, I'll include this as the opening for both
Final Fantasy X Otherworld - YouTube Ah, a childhood well spent. |

The Beatles - Abbey Road - Come Together

The Pokemon theme song

Arguably TDN's finest moment, from what's known as their best album that was not a Greatest Hits collection, Seven Separate Fools. |
