Is the legend true - do musicians ever get so hungry they eat their instruments?

I have heard it said many times that if a band gets too hungry on stage they will eat their instruments.

Recently I've even seen a picture of this happening linked here:
LadFish - Hungry Musicians

...but alas, this is only a drawing - not a photograph.

Has anyone else heard of this rumour. If so what bands, dates venues etc..

And better still can anyone direct me to some concrete evidence!

Many many thanks,

Lills

Many times, after a show, my guitar looks so outlandishly savoury and and sweet at the same time that I take a few nibbles, but then I remember that it costs several hundred dollars to get a new one and buying regular food would be a lot cheaper. Sometimes I eat a recorder for good measure when I'm really craving an instrument because they're extraordinarily cheap, but that's one of my few excursions where I really go all out and eat my instrument.

This reminds me of that time I saw someone drink the condensation from his trumpet...

Many men have tried to eat their instruments but you have to have a rib removed to accomplish this task.

Didn't one famous musician have a rib removed for the intended purpose of "eating" one of his "instruments"?

Marilyn Manson. I might see him in concert with Rob Zombie in Tampa. Pretty stoked

I have a feeling this is some urban legend/smear campaign that came from Don Draper dads in the 1950's who told this to their kids to keep them away from "the rock and/or roll music". It certainly plays into the 'starving artist' theme that you hear about with the modernist artists who made art that was not acceptable to the masses at the time.

Swallowed a piece of a guitar pick once that I was chewing, felt like it cut the back of my throat, wasn't even that hungry though.

Are you familiar with the concept of a metaphor?

That's what this is. It's when a musician is so broke that they choose to sell their instrument so they can use that cash to buy food.

Really though... evidence? :bonkhead:
