I can't say they couldn't play their instruments or anything like that, I just see them as a show band, more about the appearance than the music, a gimmick, if you will. But hey, that's part of it. They were good at what they did, as someone mentioned earlier.

With any art form, your art needs to be good (at something). Even something like Rebecca Black's song, even though it's not really good from a music point of view, was good in the sense that it stuck around in your head, it was catchy (even if you didn't want it to be). So you have to start with the content.
The second part though seems to be marketing to me. How do you market yourself? How do you get yourself out there? You can't just make stuff and sit around thinking "My **** is so good, people are just going to find me." You have to be strategic about it too. |

Keep in mind that it took Kiss a while to actually get well known. Back in the day when they were released, their first three albums did passable business with a couple of strong areas just to keep them...er...alive. Casablanca was promoting them a lot, but it took a while to score a hit with Alive! and Destroyer.

Contests are over-rated. Much like the many Model Searches that are around.
It takes that rare find to get a Manager who has the connections to get you through the door. The Industry is very tight knit, especially these days. |
