I'm amazed at how many people seem to store their cd's horizontally, they should be stored vertically based on everything that I've read.

That has more to do with vinyl than CD's. Vinyl have the tendency to warp if you store them horizontally and on top of each other, whereas CD's have the case so it doesn't do as much damage. However, I have heard that it's better for the case if the CD's are stored vertically, because a case on the bottom of the pile can't possibly hold all the weight of the CD's on top of it.
