But i suppose in some respects Ozzy has become immune to criticism. As you say, the metal community has an obsessive sense of nostalgia. and such crimes that would have any lesser worshipped metal singer ousted, lynched, placed inside the wicker man, etc. ozzy can get away with.

Such crimes include:
MTV's The Osbournes
Re-recording and ruining "Changes" by having Kelly sing alongside
Appearing in butter adverts
and Sharon....

Right but the other side of the coin is that he gave generations of fans an outlet they needed. Sabbath was the first band to ever really shove that sound in the faces of people.

When another singer invents Metal, bites the head off a bat, ingests more drugs than aerosmith on their own, and brings to light some of the best guitarists of their time then people can say Ozzy's weak tea. Until then, **** off. (not you, but people)

yeah he's pretty good. though i always thought biting off the dove's head should have gained more notoriety. It's more biblically symbolic...and he knew the dove was real =/

There's a reason Ozzy is considered the Prince of Darkness. Just like Elvis and the King of Rock n Roll, and MJ with pop, the title is earned, not given away.

Right. Same with Frankie Yankovich.

If they had their way, everything (and this is to a person here) would sound exactly like their favorite album. It could only change if it got more "intense." They generally feel that change is bad because we know what the ideal is, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It gets so bad as a matter of principle I just choose not to speak to them about music.

I just can't fathom how willed your own ignorance has to be to assume that a group of 40 somethings doing well for themselves financially would sound like they did 20 years ago when they were young, poor, and starving....idiots.
I'm an old fart myself and as time has moved on I've become more forgiving of watered down later career releases. But still, I'm going to spend much more time listening to Pig Destroyer than Ozzy. What the hell? I want intensity. I don't want to pigeonhole metal or insist that everything move in one direction but for me personally I've always had the most respect for music that pushes the boundaries.

Ozzy can still perform on his own. I am impressed with Ozzy's entertainment. Look at this 2008 performance.

Really can't stand the dio years, and I'm not even really a fan of ozzy outside of sabbath. The original sabbath was by far the best.

Ditto. I don't like much of Ozzy-era Sabbath, either.

Ozzy solo, however, has been very good. Never a bad album, and still producing quality rock music as he reaches his senior years, which is extremely unusual. Although I didn't particularly like any song from the last album. Ozzy's antics are annoying at times and the reality show was awful (later admitted to be MTV's edited version of a very ill family), but don't knock the music.

I don't mind the dio years, but I just don't like to associate Dio with Black Sabbath. Something about that just doesn't sound right. I've always associated Ozzy with Black Sabbath.
