Rolling Stone: 10 Greatest Albums of All Time

You may not agree with the list..........Isn't that the beauty of it? That everyone's list would be different? BUT what album grabs you the most from their top 10?

Janszoon 08-03-2012 08:05 AM

Ah, just the kind of safe list I would expect from Rolling Stone:
  • All rock
  • All in English
  • All from the US or UK
  • All male
  • All released in the 60s or 70s
  • Almost all white
I like a decent amount of what's on it but it really doesn't get more myopic than that list. And the fact that there are only six different artists on the list is also pretty dumb.

blackdragon123 08-03-2012 08:21 AM

This was a part of the "500" greats albums list compiled by Rolling Stone. But i couldn't be bothered making a poll with 500 choices. These are the bands with the most albums in the 500 list.

The Beatles = 10
Bob Dylan = 10
The Rolling Stones = 10
Bruce Springsteen = 10
The Who = 7
David Bowie = 5
Elton John = 5
Bob Marley & The Wailers = 5
Led Zeppelin = 5
Radiohead = 5
U2 = 5

blackdragon123 08-03-2012 08:22 AM

oops. my mistake. The Boss actually has 8

Key 08-03-2012 08:33 AM

I'd like to see Rolling Stone do a top 10 list without mentioning The Beatles. I love The Beatles give or take a couple albums, but damn.

To answer the question though, out of those ten, i'd go with Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band.

I woke up with this song in my head coincidentally.

Duraddict 08-03-2012 09:53 AM

How many threads are we going to have like this? Seriously. Is this a Beatles fan-site in disguise or something?

Halen 08-03-2012 10:02 AM

My favorite one of the list is Exile on Main St.

--

Pearl Jam's Ten should be in the top 10.

It's the best and most influential album of the latest 30 years.

Seriously... none of the southern rock bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival & Lynyrd Skynyrd. And no Pink Floyd or other rock greats like Eagles, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Van Halen, Queen, Steely Dan, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Dire Straits, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Dio, Scorpions, etc. That's a silly list... and I've always believed The Beatles are overrated but this is carrying things too far.

Likewise. I'd also think it'd be cool if they begun to do top ten lists based on online streaming popularity / download history as opposed to record sales. Because if you think about it, a lot of the not so popular and popular artists and albums that a majority of people listen to are either streamed or downloaded. Unfortunately, getting a business involved with the "download scene" could be dangerous for the company.

Anyone who reads and values the opinions of the Rolling Stone magazine is unimaginative, generic and cannot formulate opinion or taste for themselves.
I'd expect such behaviour of an android.

Yeah seriously. Those clowns even gave My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy five out of five stars.

Good job they made up for such a lack of inspiration in the following 30 years, barring "Ten" of course... :)

Of course.

NEWGUY562 08-03-2012 12:46 PM

I love the Beatles but I think Pet Sounds should be number 1. :)

What? I hate to belittle peoples music tastes full on but that is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard on here.

Name one with a bigger impact, boi.

blastingas10 08-03-2012 06:41 PM

Chill out, people. It's rolling stone, what do you expect? It's an American publication founded on rock and pop music, of course the list will consist of nothing but rock and pop music.

Nirvana - Nevermind
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Swans - Cop
Fugazi - Thirteen Songs

just a couple for you that influenced their respective genres and less of the 'Boi' thank you I'm not 12.

Are people not chilled out? It seems like a pretty relaxed conversation to me.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-03-2012 06:46 PM

There's no doubting Ten made an impact.

Sadly 99.9999999% of that impact was at the shittier end of the music spectrum.

Nevermind and its cheesy production? No thanks, that's corporate rock.

The other four records are really unknown.

Of course they are because you don't know them and it's not even a great list by myself but it was a quick list off the top of my head and yet it still contains albums that are influential.

Chill out, jans. I wasn't insinuating that anyone literally wasn't chill. It was more of a figure of speech to express that nobody should expect anything different from rolling stone

NWA - Straight Outta Compton

Considering today's mainstream musical climate, I think this album's influence has outlasted Ten.

I have no doubt that Paul McCartney slyly skipped through the entire list when it was released until he found the top 10 and a wry smile crept upon his lips as he discovered the Beatle domination of the top 10. A smile that then developed into a light chuckle...and then a s******.......and then MANIACAL SHRIEKING LAUGHTER interrupted by a phone call from Ringo.........WHO JOINED IN! AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH they said........

blackdragon123 08-04-2012 10:11 AM

The other 3 I've not heard but Massive Attack - Mezzanine was pretty popular and so was Nirvana's Nevermind.

Goofle 08-04-2012 10:15 AM

You need to check the other three out.

moserw 08-04-2012 10:21 AM

Checking out.

empress 08-04-2012 01:12 PM

i like all of those albums but it'd be nice if they did a list where they could only pick one album from each band. all of their lists are boring and generic and frankly they're kind of annoying lol...

Bob Dylan was terrible.
