Ribbons!! Welcome back, Liz. I happened to check MusicBanter and there you were! I'm glad to "see" you again.

You are so right: those songs *do* sound suspiciously alike. Do you think it is just coincidence, or do you think the artists heard/remembered the other's song and copied intentionally?

I had never heard "Mournin' Glory Story" before. It's a very thoughtful, pretty song, and I prefer it to the Beatles' "For No One." I was amused that their lyrics both emphasize the words "no one." It's almost as if "Mournin' Glory Story" gives the woman's perspective on life while "For No One" gives the man's perspective after their relationship dissolves.

Hi, Erica! It's good to "see" you too. As for whether it's coincidental or intentional, I guess only the artist knows. I tend to think one wouldn't want to intentionally copy a tune, though -- maybe it's usually just a matter of influence. I love both "For No One" and "Mournin' Glory Story". "Mourning Glory" has a string arrangement reminiscent of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" (the themes are similar, as well). And there's a horn pattern in "Mournin' Glory" that reminds me of the piccolo trumpet break in The Beatles' "Penny Lane".

Sounds suspiciously like this

Apparently the bands managers got into a pissing match and there was a lawsuit in the works but it was dropped after Cobain offed himself.
I believe that Dave Grohl from Nirvana played drums for one of their albums i return..

When I first heard the happy, bouncy beat in "Lisztomania" by Phoenix, I immediately thought of the same bouncy beat in Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes," both being very catchy songs that I enjoy:

Adam Ant - "Good Two Shoes"
Watch him dance! I hadn't seen this video before yesterday and I'm glad I did.

Something that only struck me lately, these two songs have a strikingly similar main riff and rhythm. Don't know if it was intentional or not.

The Fall - 'Squid Law'

Mercury Rev - 'Syringe Mouth'

Some people claim Muse is very, very Queen.

Other people know it for sure. The bassline is too similar to this one:

Not as much as this guy.

... and Bohemian Rhapsody mostly if I were going to compare. But the song speaks for itself.
