Adele VS Whitney Houston

What do you think?

Duraddict 07-24-2012 07:19 AM

I don't see how one compares to the other.

xMusicMan 07-24-2012 07:22 AM

why not? two great female singers :-)

moserw 07-24-2012 07:23 AM

Like/love them both.

Whitney was more mainstream/popular music.

Adele is more soul and not exactly popular/mainstream music.

Vocals = Definitely Whitney.

Best all–around performance = Definitely Adele... writes her songs and is/was mature even with her first album.

NEWGUY562 07-24-2012 07:30 AM

Adele's music is boring ..makes me sleepy and just sucks..
Never liked Whitney's music either but she has an amazing voice :)
I prefer Amy Winehouse over both :D

But why do we always compare female singers to one another. It's like one can't exist without the other.

I dunno. I don't see much in common other than they're both female singers.

Amy Winehouse is pretty cool too, but I don't think she can "compete" with Whitney's voice :-)

Janszoon 07-24-2012 07:50 AM

Adele has a song or two that I don't mind, though she's not someone I'd actively choose to listen to.

Whitney Houston, on the other hand, is responsible for some of the worst, most excruciatingly boring music released in my lifetime.

Well that's tough..Amy Winehouse sounds like a young Billie Holiday and haves a very soulful voice now whitney is more pop-ish then amy..we all know houston can sing her ass off but they have 2 completely different styles..

Check these out:

Amy winehouse - Me and Mr. Jones (with lyrics) - YouTube

Amy Winehouse - Love Is A Losing Game - YouTube

This comparison is not a smart comparison because Adele has not been in the scene as long as Whitney was.

Not exactly popular/mainstream? She's as mainstream as they come.

When I saw this thread, my initial reaction was "whhaaa???"
I also don't see how they compare. They are both artists within very different contexts.

Where they compare:
-Both R&B influenced pop singers who put out several popular ballads and have notably strong voices.

Why they contrast:
-Whitney is a gospel influenced R&B/soul singer.
vs.
Adele who is a "blue-eyed soul" singer whose style exemplifies British Soul, which is quite a bit different than American Soul in instrumentation and feel. To compare the two is like comparing British and American soul.

-Whitney Houston was an artist in the musical climate of the 80s, and the instrumentation in her music frequently consisted of synthesizers. Two of her biggest hits were dance tracks, which blended well with the popular musical aesthetic of the period.
vs.
Adele, who is a current artist who is actually quite contrasted with the current musical climate (she sticks out like a sore thumb, in a good way, on Top 40 radio). She hasn't done any dance music, and her style is more on the acoustic side, with lots of guitar and piano. A very different aesthetic.

When it comes to taste, however, I prefer Whitney Houston. I only like a couple of Adele's singles, but I like probably 15-20 Whitney Houston songs. Plus, I'm partial to 80s pop and R&B, since I grew up listening to it.

I like both!

locoman23 07-24-2012 06:03 PM

If we compare them as singers, I like Adele better. They're both powerful, with Whitney having the better technique of the two, but I like Adele's timbre more.

Are you serious? She is so overplayed here.

same here in Israel

Not so much in these parts of the world. Its all hip-hop all day long on VH1. I used to enjoy watching MTV before but not anymore.

hommystyle 07-28-2012 12:15 AM

Adele is the best in my opinion.

joy_circumcision 07-28-2012 12:29 AM

Adele is preferable, but both are far too polished for my tastes. I have difficulty hearing something resembling an inner fire, a brush with what I would subjectively and perhaps foolishly label transcendental.

I.M.A. 07-29-2012 07:22 PM

My vote is for ADELE

I agree about what you said about Whitney (even though I'm not a fan of hers) but Adele's timbre & vibrato can really grate my nerves at times.

Peacheater 08-10-2012 10:31 PM

Glennis...

[Bri] 08-10-2012 10:38 PM

They're both amazing singers (even though not my cup of tea). But, based on the number of songs I like/can tolerate from each, Adele has more, so she wins in my book.

laurablakney82888 08-13-2012 06:08 AM

*shrug* they're both different. Personally I like Whitney Houston better, something about Adelle's attitude or voice bugs me for some weird reason; but they're both very talented women with their own sense of style

Ben Butler 08-13-2012 06:41 PM

Whitney

I don’t think they’re comparable. They’re too different.

Belphegor 11-05-2020 03:31 PM

Both have good and distinct voices but I can't say I'm really a fan of either artist.
