When I saw this thread, my initial reaction was "whhaaa???"
I also don't see how they compare. They are both artists within very different contexts. Where they compare: -Both R&B influenced pop singers who put out several popular ballads and have notably strong voices. Why they contrast: -Whitney is a gospel influenced R&B/soul singer. vs. Adele who is a "blue-eyed soul" singer whose style exemplifies British Soul, which is quite a bit different than American Soul in instrumentation and feel. To compare the two is like comparing British and American soul. -Whitney Houston was an artist in the musical climate of the 80s, and the instrumentation in her music frequently consisted of synthesizers. Two of her biggest hits were dance tracks, which blended well with the popular musical aesthetic of the period. vs. Adele, who is a current artist who is actually quite contrasted with the current musical climate (she sticks out like a sore thumb, in a good way, on Top 40 radio). She hasn't done any dance music, and her style is more on the acoustic side, with lots of guitar and piano. A very different aesthetic. When it comes to taste, however, I prefer Whitney Houston. I only like a couple of Adele's singles, but I like probably 15-20 Whitney Houston songs. Plus, I'm partial to 80s pop and R&B, since I grew up listening to it. |

Not so much in these parts of the world. Its all hip-hop all day long on VH1. I used to enjoy watching MTV before but not anymore.

Adele is preferable, but both are far too polished for my tastes. I have difficulty hearing something resembling an inner fire, a brush with what I would subjectively and perhaps foolishly label transcendental.
