I miss the fact that a lot of great metal and rock bands were in their prime. Whatever you were into, from hair metal to thrash, there was loads to choose from, there always seemed to be someone touring and the scene just seemed so much more accessible than it is now.

How is that any different from now? There's a massive variety of music out there today, including styles that didn't even exist in the 80s and 90s, and there are always lots of people touring. I'm forever in the situation of having less time and money available than there are good shows to see.

Erm...where did I mention lack of variety?

I said that I (key word there) miss the fact that the metal/rock scene was better in the late 80's early 90's than it is now.

And, personally speaking, there is never anyone touring that I want to see. The last gig I went to was Pearl Jam in 2009 (Ordinarily I would have been going tonight but financial and personal circumstances mean I can't.)

Truth be told, I'm being overly nostalgic

I figured this was a reference to variety:

Really? 80s and early 90s stuff was my introduction to metal and it has a special place in my heart, but I actually think there's far better quality metal being released today.

I'm happy I can't relate. To me it seems like there's always a show on the horizon that I'd like to go to, both by current bands and bands I liked back in the 80s and 90s. Heck, Corrosion of Conformity is playing walking distance from my house this coming Monday.

Hmmm, apologies - I thought you were referring to music as a whole.

Yeah, I much preferred the buzz of the late 80's and early 90's. I can't seem to relate to modern day metal like I could then. Mind you, I was younger then (a bit) and was really into the metal scene. As I've mentioned in a previous post, I haven't exactly had my finger on the pulse for the past few years.

Modern day metal as in, today's metal bands or the sound? The sound of the 80's metal bands exists in thousands of bands of today..

If I can play thought police for a minute - I think its less about music being available, or even good, and more about a cultural hegemony that favored the OP's own aesthetic appeal rather than have a cultural landscape that questions it, or makes it the minority.
