If so, any chance of a link. I've heard a track off it and was intrigued enough to hear more.

I'll PM you, and it certainly is if you like that kind of stuff. Their first album is better though :)

And yeah, I am trying to become more obscure. The likes of bob have helped me do this, but also subscribing to some vinyl based youtube channels and adding certain people to RYM. Following the likes of Fantano can only get you so far.

Seems this year is coming to an end, so I suppose I should make a list.

In no particular order...

1. pg.lost - Key: Still blows me away when I listen to it. One of the best post-rock albums I have heard,.
2. Anathema - Weather Systems: Granted, the whole album isn't great, but the first two tracks are beautiful and very nicely done.
3. Bob Dylan - Tempest: Just gave this a listen the other day, and I can see why a lot of people would bash it, his voice is nowhere near listenable, though when has it ever been? The songwriting is what got me interested, he's a man who knows how to use his words.
4. Asia - XXX: Another album that seems to have gotten a lot of mixed reviews, but I personally found a lot of enjoyment out of it. It starts off strong with Tomorrow The World, and continues to be a good listen.
5. Rush - Clockwork Angels: Amazing album from front to back. Geddy Lee sounds as good as he ever has in this album. His age surely doesn't show too much in his vocals, even if critics would say that his voice has changed a lot, which it has, but he's using it well.
6. Lamb of God - Resolutions: Finally got around to listening to this a few days ago as well. Definitely a good match against Sacrament. Not sure which one I would say I like more, but Resolutions is definitely a great release.
7. The Sword - Apocryphon: I was pleasantly surprised to hear that this album goes back to their older sound. Not saying Warp Riders was bad in any way, in fact, I still have it as one of my favorite releases of that year, but this album really brought me back to why I fell in love with the band to begin with. Gods of The Earth is my favorite album of theirs, and this one takes the number two spot in relation to that.

That's all I can think of right now.

Mrd00d 12-03-2012 12:09 PM

POS - We Don't Even Live Here

has jumped way up my list. Didn't like much on it at first, but now there's not much I don't like. They passed Dark Time Sunshine in my hip-hop bracket at least.

If you like this enough to put it on your best of 2012 list, I highly recommend you give these two albums listen...

Tamaryn - Tender New Signs
Blonds - The Bad Ones

I think you will have 2 new albums to put on the list.

Yup, the Zappa family trust has been holding on to it for years and finally released it. It has a lot of the same songs as (Shiny Beast) Bat Chain Puller as well as Doc At the Radar Station and Ice Cream for Crow, but they're alternate versions plus it has a few new songs. Here's the tracklist:

Spoiler for tracklist:
1. Bat Chain Puller - Shiny Beast
2. Seam Crooked Sam - New Song
3. Harry Irene - Shiny Beast
4. 81 Poop Hatch - Ice Cream for Crow
5. Flavour Bud Living - Doc At the Radar Station
6. Brick Bats - Doc
7. Floppy Boot Stomp - Shiny Beast
8. Ah Carrot Is As Close As Ah Rabbit Gets to Ah Diamond - Shiny Beast
9. Owed T'Alex - Shiny Beast
10. Odd Jobs - New Song
11. The Human Totem Pole (The 1000th and Tenth Day of the Human Totem Pole) - Ice Cream
12. Apes Ma - Shiny Beast
13. Bat Chain Puller (Alternate Mix) - Shiny Beast
14. Candle Mambo - Shiny Beast
15. Hobo-Ism - New Song

The three new songs are the first non-bootleg releases of them.

Not a fan of the new Deftones at all.

Maybe if it was my first Deftones album it would be alright...but it's basically a Diamond Eyes lite which itself is a White Pony lite.

Ahh. Well, it'll probably have the same effect on me as Weather Systems (Anathema) had on me, as it was much different than what I was expecting.

Norg, despite my feelings about you, you have saved the day for me. I've been trying to remember the name of Author & Punisher for months. Thanks for posting, now I can finally listen to him again!

simoirs 12-04-2012 09:41 AM

Top 10 Yeah, I liked It!

Alt-J - An Awesome Wave
Very well done, and I'll come back to it even without all the attention they're getting this months. To me it was a nice surprise, finally something (almost) new.
Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory
I listen to it a day straight then leave it for two weeks, then again. Strange, but I keep doing it.
Sigur Ròs - Valtari
Better than the previous one, and the central part of Rembihnútur brings back the magic of the first albums.
Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action At A Distance
Everything coming from Deerhunters is always good, and Strangers is soooo sunny.
Dinosaur Jr. - I Bet On Sky
Yeah, bet on them, they never fail to write at least 3-4 amazing songs.
Alcest - Les voyages de l'âme
I always liked this artist: the fusion of "shoegaze" distorted guitars and ethereal melodies is great. With more positive songs he could write the Siamese Dream of the 2010's. Maybe.
Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania
If Teargarden By Oh Man What The Hell Is This never existed maybe I wouldn't be so happy to hear this eheh.
Tribes - Baby
It doesn't smell good, but there are singalongs!
XX - Coexist
Solid, a little too similar to the debut, maybe.
Crystal Castles - III
Dark, but when melody takes the lead is just brillant.

Top You Think I'm Stupid?

Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
Hundreds of fake stories were invented to create some interest in her. Then the news of a million-dates tour that got cancelled after a week.

Everyone is prepared now and have access to thousands of information. Only honest music will survive.

TheFolkslave 12-04-2012 12:14 PM

I haven't really listened to new releases that much this year but here goes my top 10:

1. Bob Dylan - Tempest

What can I say I'm a huge Dylan fan and the man just made one of his best albums in years.

2. The Felice Brothers - God Bless, You Amigo

This "album" was a collection of songs the band released via their website. It is a mixture of traditional folk songs and new compositions. Great stuff!

3. The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now

Not really his best album but excellent nonetheless.

4. Sera Cahoone - Deer Creek Canyon

Third solo album from the Seattle ex Carissa's Wierd drummer. I think it is her best one yet.

5. First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar

6. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!

Although half of the album Mladic and We Drift Like Worried Fire are re-workings of previously unreleased live tracks Albanian and Gamelan which I've heard dozens of times before I really liked this album. I'm really glad the band reformed and their re-union tour gig in Helsinki, Finland in 2011 is still the best live gig I've seen.

7. Two Gallants - The Bloom and the Blight

Two Gallants has been one of my favorite bands for many many years now. Their previous album was released in 2007 so I had been waiting for this fourth album for a long time. I'm glad that they delivered a solid album.

8. Ochre Room - Evening Coming In

Debut album from this folk rock/alt.country band hailings from Tampere, Finland. Really nice people also.

9. Langhorne Slim & The Law - The Way We Move

I actually couldn't think of a album number 10... goes to show how little I have actually listened to new releases this year.

2. The Panic Division - Eternalism
3. The Night Flight Orchestra - Internal Affairs
4. Ne Obliviscaris - Portal Of I
5. School Of Seven Bells - Ghostory
6. Big Big Train - English Electric Part One
7. Threshold - March Of Progress

A decent enough year overall.

10. Julia Holter - Ekstasis
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...38/3775945.jpg

A very original and wildly creative album, with some echoes of Broadcast and Kate Bush. Ekstasis is like dreamy pop music filtered through broken spectacles. However if the album had a little bit more focus it could have featured higher on my list. Can't wait to hear what she does next.

9. Wild Nothing - Nocturne
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...9c/4046889.jpg

A timeless album that harks back to the classic indie of yesteryear yet sounds completely fresh and modern. There's not one bad song on this album and it's consistency scores it extra bonus points.

8. Chairlift - Something
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...af/3706364.jpg

This album contains some of the most downright infectious songs I've heard all year, and best of all it doesn't sound one bit forced or contrived. Caroline Polachek has an amazing voice and puts it to some good use on these songs. I wish all pop music could be like this.

7. Swans - The Seer
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...84/3873725.jpg

It can be a lot to take in on one listen, but both discs on this double album have a great mixture of beautiful folk songs and darker, more menacing numbers. This album is right up there with Children Of God and Soundtracks For The Blind as the finest Swans albums.

6. Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...df/3733930.jpg

A beautiful and very melancholic album which contained one of the best singles of the year in 'Serpents'. The album doesn't quite match her previous album Epic but it comes within touching distance.

5. Sigur Rós - Valtari
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...0a/3834879.jpg

Sigur Rós returned to our ears with the gorgeously ambient Valtari, big improvement from previous album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. The album seems to take the middle ground between ( ) and Jonsi & Alex's Riceboy Sleeps album yet still sound like a fresh direction for the band.

4. Yppah - Eighty One
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...38/3874033.jpg

This album can be loosely labelled as trip-hop, but it seems to defy all definition as it takes in a multitude of influences, including indie rock. It's hypnotic, laid-back downtempo grooves and uplifting, swirling keyboards, samples and guitars transport your head to another dimension.

3. Bat For Lashes - The Haunted Man
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...37/4046522.jpg

Trying to top Two Suns was always going to be difficult. It's difficult to judge whether she did or not but she pretty much damn equaled it. The Haunted Man is a more stripped down and streamlined effort than her previous two albums but still packed plenty of killer tunes.

2. iamamiwhoami - kin
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...8d/3873941.jpg

There must be something in the water in Sweden. iamamiwhoami comes across as a more upbeat and groovier Fever Ray, probably due to the vocal similarities between Jonna Lee and Karin Dreijer Andersson. Nevertheless this collection of weird and artful electropop made for an unforgettable album and one of the defining albums of 2012 for me.

1. BATS - The Sleep Of Reason
http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...d1/4182344.jpg

Their debut Red In Tooth & Claw was excellent, but this is even better. Their brand of unhinged and energetic math-rock makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Also, how many bands have lyrics which seem like they're been taken from a science lab report? Brilliant stuff.

Honorable Mentions:
Portico Quartet - Portico Quartet, Tame Impala - Lonerism, Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!, Allo Darlin' - Europe, Beach House - Bloom, Japandroids - Celebration Rock, Mirrorring - Foreign Body, School Of Seven Bells - Ghostory, Chromatics - Kill For Love, Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage

Into the Great Bin of Many Sorrows
Grimes - Visions, Memoryhouse - The Slideshow Effect, Ringo Deathstarr - Mauve, Band Of Horses - Mirage Rock, Whirr - Pipe Dreams

Jonah-B 12-05-2012 04:22 PM

I just ran across this awesome board and I thought this would be a nice place to introduce myself! I'm struggling to come up with ten albums. I guess I've not been following new music as actively as I used to. Even so, some of the 2012 albums that do come to mind are...

mewithoutYou - Ten Stories - This one was fantastic. One of the greatest rock albums I've heard in awhile. I really love this band.

El Ten Eleven - Transitions - Just recently discovered these guys. I definitely recommend checking them out.

How to Destroy Angels - An Omen (EP) - I'm a helpless Reznor addict and I haven't heard anything from the man that I didn't enjoy, and this one was no exception.

The Mars Volta - Notctourniquet - This one seems to have made a lot of other lists. I definitely didn't think it was their best, but it was a nice highlight of 2012 albums.

Squarepusher - Ufabulum - Pretty interesting electronic-instrumental stuff. I really enjoyed it.

James Iha - Look to the Sky - Really catchy and hook driven pop rock. Pretty good stuff. It would be awesome to see James team up with Billy Corgan again. He might just be the Pumpkin's missing ingredient.

Sigur Ros - Valtari - This was a bit more ambient and unstructured than their previous works. I enjoyed it, but it left me wanting a more structured and traditional Sigur Ros album soon.

Maserati - Maserati VII - Some good cheesy rock instrumental stuff.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania - Definitely not up to the standards of the old Pumpkins. Regardless, I still enjoyed this. It just lacked that something that made the old pumpkins so good for me. As much as I wanted to love this album and see the pumpkins make a triumphant return, in the end I only mildly enjoyed it.

The biggest disappointments were...

Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods - I was hoping for another Carnavas, but these songs were boring and forgettable.

Crystal Castles - III - I enjoyed a couple of these tracks, but I had much higher hopes. I loved their first two releases and I've been looking forward to this one for a long time, but it just didn't do a whole lot for me.

GSBE - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! - GBSE has always been a hit or miss band for me. This one was a miss.

I'm sure I'll probably think of something I missed and then kick myself, but thats it for now. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna check out some of the stuff that made other people's list. Save for a few albums, 2012 ended up being a lack luster year of new music for me. Probably just because I wasn't actively looking out for new stuff the way I've done in previous years.

I didn't see this album coming...Does You Inspire You was good, but not really memorable. They were just barely tapping into the 80's vibe. But Something...oh man, I feel like they just really figured out their sound.

Two Suns has stronger singles, but The Haunted Man is way more consistent. As much as I love the album, I get a bit bored by the last couple songs on Two Suns, but it's definitely not like that on The Haunted Man. I still think there are some great individual songs, too...Laura is so simple but damn does she really make me feel it when she sings the chorus. Natasha Khan is officially the sexiest woman in music.

I definitely agree with you that it's more consistent overall, but doesn't quite have the big tunes like 'Daniel' and 'Sleep Alone'. It holds my attention that little bit more and I might even regard it as her best in a few years time.

Oh and that album cover, yum.

I love their Sparkler compilation to death, the songs on it sound fun and full of passion, Colour Trip had some good moments as well. But on Mauve they just sound like a band that has used up all their ideas and energy and can no longer get away with sounding too much like their influences. I was wishing they would try something a little different.

I've been pushing this album nonstop on here, but I based on your music taste I really think you will like it if you haven't heard it already...Blonds - The Bad Ones. Seriously.
Cool, will give it a listen when I get the chance.

I made a few changes to my Top 50 today, but my Top 10 remains the same.

No offence, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of variety in the lists and some of the albums named are just completely bland to my tastes
