This is a cool idea! I actually used to make CD's of songs that I liked from a particular year, going back to 2001 or so (back when CD burners were separate, expensive aftermarket accessories for your computer ) But yeah, I try and dig them up. I'm afraid to see what I thought was really good music when I was 11 or 12, but I guess that's all part of the fun.

I can include everyone's mixes in the first post, if you'd like to navigate easily!

I wish I had some to post, but most of them are on mix CD's somewhere. I had a sort of weirdly varied taste back then too, just different styles and bands. On one CD I'd have Trance, The Black Dahlia Murder, Enigma, As I Lay Dying, Sacred Spirit, Deftones, random songs from Counting Crows or David Gray or Dave Matthews Band, etc.

Holy crap dude this is a fantastic idea! (I also really like the use of the Spoiler tag for the massive Youtube action). I only wish I could have started this back in my teen years too, there's no way I'd be able to properly compile things per year now. I'm going to ponder my selections for a few days first but I'll definitely be revisiting this thread.

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS OF 2008
  • Clearly, this is the least diverse or eventful year I had listening to music, where I really struggled to find much that I enjoyed.
  • However, I discovered Radiohead in this time, who paved the way for all of the interests that followed. I bought their entire discography this year. Except for Pablo Honey. F that album.
  • After a year of trying to figure out who I was, I flew solo to Australia and backpacked Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This was a life changing experience.

16. "Upside Down From Here"—Atom & His Package

Some comments about the year
2011 was a pretty crazy year for me. It wasn't entirely bad but it was extremely stressful through and through. The first half of the year involved living 2000 miles from my wife, buying my first home, and recovering from pneumonia all at the same time. The second half involved my former employer screwing me out of several months of back pay, the death of my officemate, a hurricane, an earthquake, a lightning bolt that was way too close for comfort, and losing my new job because of a bunch of bullshit office politics that had nothing to do with me.

I think this group of favorite tracks of the year reflects my experience quite a bit. A lot of them are, to me, the sound of barely controlled chaos (2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 14), while others are the kind of upbeat, uplifting music that I needed to keep me feeling positive (15, 16). This was also a year of me expanding my tastes a lot, listening to a fair amount of experimental stuff, and for the first time, getting into both European classical (12) and Chinese/Korean classical (1). Other tracks were just great music (4, 10, 11, 13) I was into over the course of the year.

I have to thank bob and sneer for getting me into Whores (bob) and Necro Deathmort (sneer), by the way. Great stuff.

Spoiler for the songs (warning: lots of YouTube videos):

1. "Galloping Over the Vast Grasslands"—Anna Guo (couldn't find the version I have, but here's the song performed by someone else).

2. "The Optician Pt. 1"—Psychofagist

3. "Rhymes I Sniff (a.k.a Carlos Died)"—Cenobites

4. "Left Side of the Brain"—Gift of Gab (track ends at 2:15)

5. "The Fist Of The Leng Tch'e"—Leng Tch'e

6. "Flail"—Pivixki

7. "The Stone Tape"—Combat Astronomy

8. "On The Way Home"—Lykathea Aflame

9. "Don't Mess with Texas"—Swarrrm

10. "Jumpin' at the Woodside"—Lionel Hampton & Stan Getz

11. "Finale"—Friedrich Gulda & Klaus Weiss (no YouTube video available unfortunately, but trust me, it's some fantastic organ and drums jazz)

12. "Dance of the Knights"—Sergei Prokofiev

13. "Temple of Juno"—Necro Deathmort

14. "Tell Me Something Scientific"—Whores.

15. "Roam"—The B-52's

16. "Upside Down From Here"—Atom & His Package

  • Traveled to Ireland and Scotland for the first time.
