David Bowie's Best/Worst...

2 Attachment(s)
My father had me put together a David Bowie playlist for him on his Ipod and I heard many songs that I enjoyed by Mr. Bowie (so now I'm getting into his whole body of work it's another music journey for me) :)
So i had to ask you guys...What is your favorite era of bowie (ziggy, plastic soul, thin white duke/berlin trilogy,80's mainstream,90's electronica, neoclassicist) ? favorite album? & least favorite album? ...
so far my favorite album is Low
Attachment 4873

..and Least favorite Tonight

I'm not totally into Bowie, but of those I've heard I'd have to say

Ziggy Stardust
Heroes
Low
Diamond dogs
Heathen

The classic Bowie albums in chrono order are:

The Man Who Sold the World
Hunky Dory
Ziggy Stardust and............
Aladdin Sane
Low
Heroes

The rest range from being good to average. Tonight though is probably his worst album.

my fave is "Station to Station" - it's his most "Krautrock" influenced, and a big leap up from "Young Americans" (which I thought was a disaster) and before the overrated "Berlin trilogy" (which are all alright, but I don't have that high an esteem for them)

worst is probably the "Labyrinth" soundtrack - although he did only half of it, those few songs are inexcusable

he can't sing soul nor funk for peanuts

he oughtn't have tried sounding "black"

yes, the Berlin trilogy is overrated for me, Low and Heroes had some good songs, and some good instrumentals, but had a number of filler as well

Lodger is mostly a pile of crap except for "DJ"

he is one of the forefronts for plastic soul and that album showcased it :)

wow that's so not true ..actually there arent any fillers every song fits perfect on those albums and this is coming from a new fan..

lodger was a very stranger album but it stands well in david's catalog

Screen13 06-05-2012 03:01 PM

My favorites are going to go with two the Ziggy/Glam era - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars and Aladdin Sane, although I'm alright with Diamond Dogs.

The Berlin Trilogy era is next for me, especially 'Heroes' especially since it's the one that impressed me the first. Low is cool, and parts of Lodger are still good with me (more on the "heard it as a kid" side of me, but the singles still rule.

Of course, there's also the ultra-fine Station to Station.

Choice cuts from other eras...

Early On/Deram era, I love some of the songs. Yes, even his attempts to break in the Mod scene that just did not work completely. "Can't Help Thinking About Me" is my favorite Mod A-Side although I have a weakness for "I Dig Everything" (I like that cheesy instrumentation that's fitting of an Exploitation flick) while his Deram era at least had "She's Got Medals" and "Silly Boy Blue," with a mention of "Let Me Sleep Beside You" and "In the Heat of the Morning" being songs only the lucky heard before their appearances on collections.

The Post-Deram/Per-Ziggy has a lot of classics, with the album nod going to The Man Who Sold the World. Of course, there's also "Space Oddity," Queen Bitch," "Changes," and "Life On Mars" among other greats.

His Soul and Funk moments had a few great ones on Young Americans, and I still love "Fame." Some others 80's and beyond however are pretty weak in my opinion, and I will have to say that "Underground" was a sorry thing, especially the last half that goes overboard.

The only 80's I can hear full on is Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). I tried to like Let's Dance and Tonight, only to find myself not getting into them much. The singles from Let's Dance were overplayed enough through my High School years that I'm still trying to place a fair judgement, although I still applaud him for actually breaking through The US in a big way in The 80's and at least choosing songs that at least brought Iggy Pop a good amount of money (always rooted for him). Still - "Loving the Alien," "Absolute Beginners," and "Never Let Me Down" remain picks I still rate as highlights with a nod to "Modern Love."

I'm still trying to decide if his Tin Machine era is my least favorite, though. I'll get back to it later.

As it's about Bowie, I'll end this on a great note...

I may be in the smaller percentage, but I sometimes listen to Hours... as it was a good album, and something that did not sound like it was trying to hard to ride on the trend of the moment. A fine way to end the Millennium in my opinion - sounding more of a toned down, almost reflective style that works.

Unknown Soldier 06-05-2012 03:10 PM

I only really like a couple of late period Bowie songs and they are "A Small Plot of Land" and "Hallo Spaceboy" They're great, because they sounds like a cut and paste jobs of earlier classic Bowie material, that is done really well.

Bumping because I wanted to ask the forum, did he totally avoid the media since 2006? I ask because between WAWN coming out at the end of 2012 up until his death I can't recall a single interview, or even a quote in an article from him or anything like that. Before WAWN I understand because he wasn't musically active.

What were his last public comments? This, ten years before he died ?:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUXp59NaNig

No comments on how The Next Day did, what he wanted to do with that or anything? Was all that done via Tony Visconti?

On topic, his best is Low and his worst is probably NLMD.

Also sorry for the bump I know it's annoying.

Frownland 10-31-2017 03:01 PM

Best: Blackstar, Black Tie, White Noise,....does The Idiot count?
Worst: Most of them

Yes mate, as far as I'm concerned, The Idiot is a Bowie album. Iggy just sang over it.

He's the king of filler. Also it shouldn't, but all of the dickriding pushes my meh stance closer to a dislike.

Cuthbert 10-31-2017 03:18 PM

Most of the albums from the 70s have excellent quality control and very little filler (aside from Pin Ups which is a cover album, Young Americans, Diamond Dogs and maybe Lodger).

Filler is probably subjective, but every time I've tried Low (and that's many full listens since so many here hold it in high regard) I've just been so disinterested in it that I can't help but call it filler.

Cuthbert 10-31-2017 03:26 PM

Is that your opinion of Heroes as well?

rubber soul 10-31-2017 03:29 PM

The only album from the seventies I really didn't like was Young Americans. Fame was the only track I really liked on the album. I do think Station to Station was mediocre by Bowie standards but I thought the other late seventies material was quite good. Low did have a lot of instrumentals to be sure but I would hardly call them filler and I especially liked Lodger (though I will admit I don't listen to every song like I might with Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, or Alladin Sane).

Frownland 10-31-2017 03:30 PM

@MLM I'd have to listen to it again to give you an honest answer. The ones I return to to see if I'm missing anything is Ziggy, Diamond Dogs, and Low.

Fair enough mate. I think Heroes is closer in sound to The Idiot than Low is, so you might like it.

I overplayed Ziggy. Probably agree.

EDIT: Ignore this edit, my fault sorry.

Heroes is solid, but Low is head and shoulders better imo. I think I actually prefer Lodger to Heroes too.

Btw messaged you back like ten minutes ago :D

rubber soul 11-02-2017 03:33 PM

Heroes is a good album and the title track is actually my second favorite Bowie song, but I do agree Low and Lodger are better.

Cuthbert 11-02-2017 03:36 PM

Heroes is better than Lodger.

Secret Life of Arabia should have been on Lodger though it would have worked better on that.

It's been a minute since I even listened to a Bowie album and I never listened to that many. Enough to decide I'd give him a thorough look some time. Low was definitely sweet but I don't remember much of the rest.

rubber soul 11-02-2017 04:37 PM

Try the Man Who Sold the World, Batlord. It's probably about the heaviest album Bowie did. You might like Ziggy Stardust and Alladin Sane too.

MicShazam 11-02-2017 04:43 PM

Pleb as I am, this is my only Bowie album (and my favorite):

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...9_coverart.jpg

I did own Lodger, 1.Outside and Young Americans once. All were quite hit and miss. I also had Hours and I thought it was extremely boring - but at least I think even most Bowie diehards agree with me on that one.

The one Bowie album I'm actually planning to buy is Blackstar.
