Okay, since the thread has died, I'm Necromancing this mother back to life.
SHAMAHOW! Okay, new topic to post YOUR OFFICIAL OPINION ON is country and western music. I live in Louisville, and in case you guys weren't aware, country is pretty much the biggest genre of music for people here (with terrible hip hop a close second). We have five country radio stations I know of. People here unironically wear cowboy hats and apparel with the John Deere Tractor plastered on it. Country isn't just music here, it's a political party, a statement, a way of life. Playing it loudly from a pickup truck is one of the easiest ways to let others know how you feel about every topic under the sun, and it's generally understood by those who live here. That said, I don't usually listen to it. I don't dislike it, it just bores me as a genre. I will occasionally listen to alternative country, or country infused acts, but rarely straight-up country and western. Not only do I not really like the music that much, but I honestly don't want to be associated with the stereotypes that come up when others hear it. It is quite a meaningful way to tell others about yourself.

There are some great acts in country that you should not be ashamed to listen to:
STEVE EARLE NANCI GRIFFITH DWIGHT YOAKAM Try blasting these out of the back of your pickup truck and see what others think! Country can be cool, and can rock (though it can often suck)...

I think it would make the topic easier to discuss if the OP was updated when the topic was changed. Maybe just make a list, the most recent topic being the one at the bottom of the list.
My opinions on the topics: Music and eating: I don't mind music while eating, it depends on the mood and the surroundings and the time and everything like that. I won't make the people turn the music off at a party when it's time to eat, but I probably won't turn on music solely TO eat, either. Music and reading: This, again, has a lot to do with the mood. I usually won't listen to music while reading at all, I would rather it be quiet. Depends what I'm reading and when. If it's academic reading, I need something calm, no words, something I don't know and won't sing along to or be distracted by. If I'm reading a novel, the music has to go with the mood of the book. And moods in books change so I would really rather listen to no music or listen to rainymood.com. Country Music: I never listen to it on my own, ever. Not because I hate it and not because I'm embarrassed, it's really just not my music of choice. But since I go to school where almost EVERYONE does, I do find that I can find myself tapping my foot to a song or two. |

When it comes to country, I like some of the old boys like Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Earl Scruggs and particularly Jerry Reed.
Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed (along with other groups like The Shadows) had a lot of influence on one of Norway's great guitar players Øystein Sunde so by listening to Øystein Sunde since I was a kid, I guess that brand of country music just found a sort of special place in my musical palate. Here's a sample of Øystein Sunde's country music. Sure I've posted it before, but oh well. Pretty awesome, huh? When it comes to later american artists like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson or Billy Ray Cyrus just to mention some of the most famous, there's little to interest me. It's like it's music from a culture so far removed from our own, I haven't felt that brand of country music really spoke to me .. at least not yet.

I used to hate country, but realized in the last few years I just hate country music fans... and most of the new radio country "She Thinks My Tractors Sexy" nonsense.
I can dig on bluegrass. I can dig on country tinged tunes by folks like Beck or Cake. I can dig country on an instrumental level without question. It's just the lyrics that drive me batty more than anything else... I don't like the country pride, basically. The country mentality being discussed up there disgusts me for reasons I have trouble describing. You say blasting the country music is like a flag saying "I'm one of you, and here's how I feel about this, that, and the other thing" but what it says to me is "There's an individual who I don't want to speak with. There's a potentially drunk redneck. There's a moron." Sounds a bit mean, but that's the reaction I have. |

my opinion on country music?
i like the more established artists - Merle, Waylon, Willie, and that's all from comps like most people here, don't really dig the new-ish CMT-type stuff |
