Billy Holiday is excellent for wining and dining

Caught me. I had something different in mind originally, but didn't want to come off as advising certain things.

As for your 2nd comment. I've been guilty of being the one to force others to hear my music, it's kind of a 'feature' to open ear headphone design (and SO MUCH more comfortable than closed ear). The thing is I normally don't realize how loud it actually is to the people around me until I see their mouths move but don't hear anything but my music.

Though I don't think that's nearly as annoying as cell phone DJs. Yes I can see that you have a smartphone, OH WOW! you have the latest Eminem single on there and you're going to show me how cool you are by letting me hear it through a crappy phone speaker? You shouldn't! REALLY THOUGH. You should not.

But the worse, the ABSOLUTE worse I've had to deal with in a public situation like that is someone who uses earbuds with their phone so only they can hear whatever song they want to hear... but they'll sing along, except they can't really sing, and where they're not whispering either it just kind of comes out. No definition in the lyrics, no tone in the voice, just half hearted, half spoken 'signing'... she got eyes... of the bluest. skies... and if. they, thought of rain... I'd. Hate to look. Into those eyes. And see, an ounce of pain.

If only their mouth was as considerate.
Metalocalypse is worth a laugh or five. I watched the first season to death and gave the 2nd and 3rd a watch-through, and I'll watch the next. They're short episodes, so enjoy them while they're fresh and new because they go fast.

As far as the rest, I know what you mean. It's usually young women that do it, and they carry the attitude of "I know you all can hear me, and I'm not great, but I don't give a damn". I'll hold off on more details/comments on this subject for a little bit, when I have more time to write a shpiel.

You don't have any reading music picked out? Ambient electronic does wonders for me while reading.

I hate the tv, especially with company or while I'm eating or reading.

It seems like it might be a fluid thread where topics will shift on their own, because Mr. Dave and I already started a little, but some of us aren't dont with the first topic yet. So it will move at its own pace, with a little guidance from you or what not on preparing for the next topic.

Dear god, I hate people like you. Nothing annoys me more than people in a library or computer lab just blasting music through their headphones. No need for it, and extremely annoying. Usually the same people who talk loudly and over-laugh at semi-funny jokes.

You must be a sports fan

Anyway, I never said *I* was the type to blast music in a library , but perhaps on a bus I wouldn't turn my headphones down, for example. I could bust out my speakers if I wanted to be a dick... then not only would the whole bus hear but probably the surrounding cars. But I'm wearing headphones for the benefit of those around me and my own, so I don't need to hear babies crying or tweakers tweaking or any nonsense. I'm already doing the 'right thing', but I still reserve the right to have my music loud enough to drown out all sounds around me.

I actually get really paranoid about whether or not people can hear my music. I bought earbuds for work just to be sure I wasn't bugging anyone...and that I could hear people when they talk to me. Once I forgot I even had my headphones in and my boss was talking to me and mentioned I was only giving him half my attention...it was pretty embarrassing. This all started, though, when I walked into math class one day. Class hadn't even started, so I was enjoying the rest of my album and the prof looked at me and said "You may understand what's going on and don't need to focus but others might...so we don't want to hear your music." This came from a guy with a Zildjian shirt on. I was confused, but I made sure no one could hear my music after that.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Whatever works is great with me, I'm honestly surprised it's gotten this far.

That's totally me. Except, unlike the woman you mention, I literally have no idea I am doing it. I sing, tap a beat, and move around without realizing and only snap back into reality when someone physically lets me know that they are annoyed. I can't help it, it just happens that way.

Reading and listening to music at the same time only works for me when it's a certain type of book paired with certain music. I was reading "War of the Worlds" today to the sounds of The Caretaker and Drudkh, dark ambient and atmospheric black metal respectively. That worked perfectly, it totally set up what was happening in the book. However, I couldn't possibly have read the same book while listening to, say, disco. Or Herbie Hancock. Though if I had been reading a book on 70's and 80's urban culture... then I probably could have. I'm not really sure if that makes sense or sounds weird, but that's how it is for me.

On the topic of music playing so loud in headphones people around you can hear it, I don't care. At all. I've done it, I constantly hear others when they do it, and it doesn't bother me.

...EXCEPT when it's little kids. That bothers me simply because their inner ears have not yet developed completely, and using ear phones a lot at a young age can permanently damage the kid's ears. Seeing 8, 9, t0, or 11 year olds do that to whatever crap they have decided is great kills me, because I know they'll pay for it later.

Nah, I don't put music on when I read. I become completely enveloped in the text and block out all noise anyway, so it would be pointless.

I'm completely on board with you on this. When you are reading something, you may think to yourself "Hm... you know <such and such band> would go great with this. Instrumental music is a must for me, more or less, when it comes to reading. But I've read along to the likes of Primus, Rage Against the Machine, etc. without issue - like when reading for school, whatever. As far as reading for pleasure, like ... when I was reading the Wheel of Time series, I listened to a lot of downtempo music like Bluetech that kind of went with the magical feel of the books. But then I also listened to Cake. I can't hardly think of the series without breaking into a Cake song, and the content doesn't really make for a great match, but I know Cake better than I know the back of my hand, so I don't put much energy into actively listening to it.

I am SO paranoid about this that I turn my volume down to absurdly low levels in quiet public places. Which reminds me of a funny story at the library-- I was sitting in a fairly well-occupied section of the library in total silence when this girl gets out of the elevator (wearing those ****ty earbuds that come with iPods) blaring her music full-bore, so loudly that every single head turned to look as she walked by. Pretty comical.

Interesting. We both listen to metal when working on school. I thought I was the only one.

And do certain literary genres go best with certain musical genres? For instance, does horror writing go best with, say, black metal? Does a noir book pair with noir jazz, like Bohren & der Club of Gore? And so on.

I've been wondering that, too. Honestly, it's really bugging me. Can't tell who is who any more.

You could roll your eyes northward a couple degrees and read the poster's user name if you're really curious.

On topic, I never listen to music while reading. One of the two activities is sure to be ignored if I do that.
