Default Can appearances can be deceptive?

To look at me (short hair, clean shaven, casual dresser, wear tie to work) I wouldn't imagine that a lot of people would guess I listen to (amongst others) Pantera, Slayer and Obituary. In a strange kind of way I like this, the fact that I'm not predictable and I have raised more than a few eyebrows when the subject of music comes up in conversation.

This is something that I've been thinking about recently and would be interested to hear other views; Do you dress in accordance to your musical preferences? Do you find it necessary to do so?

And yeah, I know I screwed the thread title up!!

Nah, i don't think appearances matter at all. I think you have to look into people's eyes, into who they are. That is usually how I can tell.

I've been surprised by so many people after assuming they were into certain things. I know a guy who dresses "gothy" and I assumed he was into metal and ****. When he wasn't, he was pretty much into the same kind of music as me which was a big shock.

Usually, the reaction I get is "Oh...I wasn't expecting that!" or something similar, which kind of begs the question as to what they were expecting.

Probably better that I don't know!

Honestly, I don't even know what dressing in accordance with my musical preferences would look like so I guess my answer would be no.

^ Oh man, to be young enough for this to still matter again

What I've noticed over the years is that workplace attitude, especially towards intangible elements of the workplace like authority figures and the corporate structure are the new telltale signs for stylistic preference.

If I'm in a meeting with a manager who keeps trying to make witty one-liners it's pretty well guaranteed they're into hip-hop (particularly mainstream fare like Eminem or Kanye). A manager who'll just bit their tongue, then complain about the corporate machine while doling out tasks on a new project - likely a metal head outside the office. Someone who's always perky and farting sunshine and waving their hands highest and hardest at the opportunity to volunteer for a corporate event - top40 pop tart.

It's just stereotypes at the end of the day and I know I stereotype people. It's got nothing to do with what you wear mattering to people.

Not so much the way I dress, but because I'm an intellectual, kind, nice person people make assumptions. Most immediately think all I listen to is classical, or country and western for some reason. When I tell them what I do listen to most are seriously confused.

Then again, they could just be confused because they literally don't understand that there are musicians other than those on the radio.

I feel like I would get drug tested a lot more if I dressed like my musical taste.

I don't dress like the music I listen to, then again as well people are surprised when I tell them who I like.

Don't think it's cool to listen to "un cool" music, it's not original and in fashion
