Apparently lots of people had similar experiences with this man's work to mine and I'll reminisce here too:
I was in 7th or 8th grade when I first heard of the band. That was because a friend of mine had bought the Licensed To Ill cassette and taped the insert to his 3-ring binder so that it showed the entire linear plane-crash. I spent most of that year contemplating how awesome the album cover is. Of course Fight for Your Right was heard constantly on the radio and MTv at the time and their inflatable penis was all over the news. I didn't love the song or video but damn if I didn't love that album cover. Around that time I stayed up late to watch their Letterman interview. One of the memories burned into my brain is Dave asking them their ages and MCA responding that he was 12. Later, in college dorm life I drank countless cheap beers and smoked much weed while watching the 'Sabotage' video. In one semester I'm sure I watched that thing 1000 times. And 'Ill Communication' became one of my favorite albums simply because I heard it so goddam many times that year. Adam Yauch had the best voice of the three by far and my ears always perked up during his verses in all of their songs. He also was probably the first person ever who I thought looked good with a full beard. I'll never forget him.

Like Urban most of us in the U.K first experienced Beastie Boys through the Licensed To Ill album and all the furore that surrounded them but on later inspection they are a band that united many fans as they love both Punk and Hip Hop and are always respectful to both genres and played both with aplomb. Their Hip Hop tracks were always performed live in the studio and added a lot more gravitas to their music for those unfamiliar to Hip Hop.
R.I.P Sir and such a young age to die (as known from experience). Who knew that Beastie Boys could give us such music?

Very sad. Having been born in 1987, I was far too young to experience the furore around the band's License to lll tour, in fact my first meaningful exposure to the Beastie Boys was Hello Nasty. That album, Check Your Head, Paul's Boutique and Ill Communication are all-time favourites, and for that I have a lot to thank them for.

ah yes....the Raising Hell tour with Run DMC
good times i think there is a very good chance that i learned lust, drunkenness, and destructive behavior (my three favorite vices) from this band back in 1986 i can definably say that License To Ill was the first tape i bought that seemed to piss of all of my friends parents....as well as mine "beer drinkin, breathe stinkin, sniffin glue"....quite an impact on a 10 year old brain |
