Hear this one here. This song was in the mid 1960s. This was before Rumba changed radically from little western influence in it. This song has a Chuck Berry effct. Franco was excellent in this song

Hey if post-1950 music is allowed then early Patsy Cline deserves attention.
It's probably not old-timey enough but from it's from 1957 and sexy as hell..

I'd say a good guideline for what constitutes "early 20th century" is music from before the 1940s.

i can't believe we're 4 pages in and nobody's mentioned my favourite - Jelly Roll Morton, if you dig Scott Joplin, you'd ease into Jelly Roll fast:-

sorry about the sound quality, it was recorded around 1910, after all

i actually prefer the solo piano version, which i could play

I actually thought I had mentioned him but I guess not. I love that guy. Another great song by him:

I've downloaded a whole bunch of Fats Waller recently. Not really a fan of his organ stuff, but I love it when he sounds like this:

Here's some more white college boys playing "Original Dixieland" Jazz (famous for spelling it as Jass for a while). They sound pretty good though if you take the time to listen to an entire album. This one song features them emulating the sounds of farm animals..

Livery Stable Blues (1917)

I got a collection of Henry Thomas' recordings the other day. All of these songs were recorded in 1927-1929. They're blues, basically, but a kind of blues reminiscent of 19th century proto-blues. Not surprising from a guy born to former slaves nine years after the end of the Civil War. The really interesting part to me is that, in addition to the guitar, he played the quills—a sort handmade pan flute—which gives the music a certain sweetness and innocence not commonly heard in the blues. He also wrote a song that was reinterpreted and made famous by some hippies in the 1960s. They changed the name, but you probably recognize the tune:
