Most people don't ask me that question - instead, I'm usually the one asking the question. Unfortunately, most of the time it's "I listen to everything" which I absolutely HATE as an answer because it tells me nothing and it's so cliche.

I've had this question a lot this past year since I moved to University Halls; and it's something you don't wanna look like a dick answering to your flatmates/neighbours.

It's pretty easy to sum up how you should answer the question, and I mostly answer after hearing theirs first, and rather saying what I like as a whole, I tend to answer by saying "I like [insert band from their preferred genre's] and [insert favourite band/genre]".

I've only met one person who has a fairly similar music taste to myself, and even then we differ quite largely, but we've both introduced each other to music. For example I'd never even listened to Pixies before, but now I can't stop.

Most of my friends are musicians, so the question is more on the lines of "Listened to anything interesting lately?" and then we have a stimulating conversation.

to be truthful, here in Kuala Lumpur there's only one other music geek I know that we both mutually influence each other's taste

still, he won't touch rap

and i won't touch Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree
