Trivial Predictable Question Yet Beneficial - Your Favourite Song...Like....EVER

Hey, I usually hate when people ask this question to me, but just post the song that captures your essence, your soul the best. The song that describes you best, how you see the world. You can post more than one, no strict rules here. Share with me who you are through music. Don't be afraid to post a song that you think other people might not like, this is your personal song and we want to hear it.

My first choice is this. It is 80's psychedelic music. For me it captures that sensation of life, where I am confounded by the beauty of even the smallest and most seemingly irrelevant and subtle of things. It also captures feelings of love and friendship for me, and nostalgia.

For me it captures feelings of isolation in the modern industrialized world as well. Jesus I sound pretentious. Well thats how I feel. Whatever.

I know it's not the best song of all time, but it's my favourite. And that bass...

PoorOldPo 02-03-2012 04:57 AM

Well if it is your favourite then that is all that matters! Man that song was Savage ( Really cool ) Really like his vocals and the bass. Badassery at its finest.

This song reminds me of falling in love, partly because I heard it for the first time when I was experiencing said sensation.

One of U2's most experimental, ethereal songs. Sublime.

U2 - Promenade - YouTube

Goofle 02-03-2012 05:14 AM

Not the biggest U2 fan, but that is a great tune. Just don't watch the video :D

I think everyone has a favourite in most genres (that they care for) to be honest. So here's what I consider to be my current favourite Hip Hop song ever.

No Hip Hop artist has grown on me as much as Kendrick Lamar. I always loved Section.80 but the more I listen to it, the more I consider it to be one of the best albums of all time. Also, this is the only Hip Hop album that has actually made me teary, and I am not the kind of person who gets all that emotional when listening to music.

Howard the Duck 02-03-2012 06:05 AM

i'm not a huge fan of Cash's American Recordings, but this one, this one.......

you can hear every bit of emotion he's putting into the song, and the images in the video just seques, you feel every iota of his frustration as he's nearing death, mourning the death of June, of how he could and would have changed things in his past

and when he cries out "i will give it all, my empire of dirt" - i'm bawling like a baby

i surmise this is how i would feel, as encapsulated in the song, when i'm nearing the Kingdom

PoorOldPo 02-03-2012 06:12 AM

That Hip Hop song was badass! You like your badass songs Tom!

And Yeah Duce, that song is beautiful, Cash really let loose on that one.

This one is from a band that happen to be friends of mine. This song is absolutely beautiful, the guy who wrote it ( Philip Christie ) is a genius. It captures the feeling of the unkown for me, the ethereal qualities to life. The notion that we are only human and to think that we know everything is silly, the possibility that there is so much more to the world than what we physically see. Supernaturally, spiritually and existentially. Name refers to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

But you are only supposed to pick one song aren't you? :D Obviously that is pretty much impossible for people who have heard much music anyway but that was the premise of the thread. Anyway if I did pick something I would be very uncool to people here and probably not pick something rock or alternative, it would be either classical or something more 'pop'. But then why should I care what others think, I'm not looking to boost my credentials with certain people here.

As I like the craft of ballads, in particular for their compositional breadth and expressivity, I would probably pick something from the 70s, though the 2000s would also have some things in contention (but more non-English stuff). Anyway for whatever it matters I'll pick this one which I like for the 70s craft and purity of melody, where music can be expressive but also constrained within it's art giving it more power.

Yeah I was cheating, sorry bout that! But its so hard to pick!

I have many favourites, but one of the songs that have stayed with me the longest - and which is currently nr. 9 on my last.fm's most played songs - is Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here which is the title track from the 1975 studio album.

In case there's someone in the universe who don't know it, it's a song for Syd Barrett who had a mental breakdown and left the band. The start of the song is supposed to be like someone listening to a song on the radio and playing along.

Beautiful, powerful .. and easy to play on a guitar ;) I played this a lot when I was learning.

CanwllCorfe 02-03-2012 06:18 PM

On the one hand, I would think it would be something from Burial, but then there's this song. Ever since I had this song on my iPhone, I've never skipped over it. Not once. I'll shuffle through anything, but I just can't skip over this song. It strikes such a perfect balance of sadness and energy. The way his voice gets more desperate after everything falls away and builds back up slowly (around 4:40) is just perfect. I love it. It reminds me of me a couple years ago. I'm much more optimistic now, thankfully.

I managed to do a speech at my lovers funeral and I ended with " and in the words of my favourite band 'How I Wish You Were Here' my love."

The really odd thing here is that a song that means so much to someone can seem inconsequential in the context of this thread as we all have different perspectives on life.

What is emotional and lyrically pertinent to one person is inconsequential to another person depending on their circumstances.

This will do for me though.

starrynight 02-03-2012 06:54 PM

One song will never contain all perspectives on life.

Yeah I've always preferred the Peel version to the album version because of the bass too.

More Than This has always struck a chord with me. It reasonates with my life in so many ways.

I also think Baba should be here too.

Howard the Duck 02-04-2012 12:30 AM

if you wanna talk about The Who, nothing beats this:-

it's like God's fnger descended from Heaven and declared to Pete - "Play This Riff!!!!!"

ribbons 02-04-2012 12:47 AM

I never get tired of listening to these songs, and as for capturing my "essence" there has to be two: one the positive, loving side and the other drifting to melancholy. I like to think the positive is the much stronger of the two, though.

Well I know that, but the one that captures your aura the most then.

Lisnaholic 02-05-2012 09:42 AM

This thread has some beautiful tracks and some interesting revelations. Out of many, this would probably be my special song :-

I`ve been playing this regularly across the years ever since it came out, and if you`re wondering why, let me try to explain:-
At first it appears to be a lazy, unassuming song by a guy with a monotonous voice who can`t be bothered with anything more than casual strumming. He`s making no great claims for himself ( We`re the fishes and all we do...) and he can`t quite make sense of what is around him; he seems to be floundering about in a kind of soupy mess of romance, childishness, mystery and the mundane and yet as the song advances, he somehow conveys that this confusion is in itself beautiful and worthy of celebration. If ever you have felt that your circumstances are drab or random, Syd is here to say, "Don`t worry, there is still something of gold to be found in them."
So, it`s a song that is both reassuring and unsettling; it`s plodding but uplifting, relaxing but puzzling, and, er, that`s why I like it !

Zer0 02-05-2012 10:18 AM

It's nearly impossible to pick a single favourite but I guess I have to go with this

Why is it my favourite? It ticks all my boxes. It's soft, dreamy, bittersweet, memorable, it has a sense of nostalgia, I never get tired of it no matter how many times I hear it. Even the promo video is one of my favourites, it reminds me of college parties and people I used to know. It suits the music so well too. Slowdive are also one of my all-time favourite bands.

Absolutely beautiful. Jaysuz!

What I find interesting with this thread is most of the songs that people pick to describe their aura or psyche, are quite nostalgic and dreamy.

I just wanted to go back to this song coz it probably is my favourite song. One line in particular, kind of mid-ways through the song. 2:20

" Debating what is and isn't there.....Who cares "

I don't usually hold that much weight to lyrics in songs, I usually find more emotional weight in the atmosphere, but that line really gets me for some reason. Kind of like....People are always trying to figure out the meaning of things...the meaning of life, what happens after we die? Why am I here? But it is all completely irrelevant in the long run, because we will never know in this life. Beautiful.

Frownland 02-05-2012 05:57 PM

I go through phases with what music I listen to, but there are always bands and albums that I fall back on as a neutralizer. The most significant one for me is Pink Floyd's The Wall and Animals. Overall, Dogs always serves as a great interim after playing it to death from the first time that I heard it. Whenever I give it a break, I always find it to be just as magical as the first time that I've heard it, and my knees go weak at the beauty of the guitar/keyboard harmony on one of the interludes and the climax always rocks me to no end.

Long story short, I have a raging boner for this song.

PoorOldPo 02-05-2012 06:16 PM

those guys took a lot of acid, LOL. Awesome song.

jackhammer 02-05-2012 06:16 PM

Hypnotic, slightly off centre, repetitive drum beat, female vocals. Absolutely love this song and I can listen to it at any time of the day.

As for the song that describes who I am?

Unpredictable, intense, in tune with the dark and light yet never being a part of either but still constantly intrigued.

This is one that's really resonated with me a lot as of late.

Melancholy, disillusionment...what appears to be a silver lining is completely empty and worthless. Don't lie to yourself.

That's probably depressing, but it's certainly struck a chord with me lately.

Odyshape 02-06-2012 03:38 PM

I would have to say this song pretty accurately represent me in a lot of ways right now. First an most importantly it hasn't lost its relevance to me over the past 4 years since I have known it and around that time it was a large driving force in getting me interested in music. More importantly though I have connected it to the song in many ways over time. A long time ago I was amazed by its intimacy was just impressed with how the band was able to really show so much to an audience. I praised it was a lot of endearment and thought what they did was so great but something I could never do (be so intimate to an audience). Now though the songs intimacy is actually something I can relate to rather than watch from afar. Because of this I would have to say this is my favorite song! I have had my ups and downs with The Raincoats but its only a matter of time before I come back to them and appreciate them.

I hate the word 'aura', reminds me of most people out there who think they can judge people just by what they think they see in someone who they don't actually know at all. Most people are just useless at judging people like that and yet they are completely oblivious to their ignorance. Better to just say personality which you only know when you actually get to know somebone. Anyway I'd probably pick something more passionate than the first song I did, but something still with some beauty and craft to it.

The Mama's and the Papa's - California Dreaming

This song is my favourite song ever. It never fades, it never stops being relevant. It's incredibly beautiful, slightly haunting and describes living the moment and never giving up on yourself no matter dark you feel inside.

Runners up:

The Rolling Stones - Angie

This has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Raw, sweet emotion and gentle riffs make all the hurt from the past dissipate into the deep.

Deep Purple - Sweet Child In Time

An unbelievable song that has such a intense build up and delicious keyboarding. Beginning with a low soulful start, the gripping lyrics sink in and the power of the song begins to grab hold.

PoorOldPo 02-07-2012 03:43 AM

I love that song Angie.

Howard the Duck 02-07-2012 03:48 AM

well, if you want me to put up a runner-up, it's this one:-

captures all the naivete and "stupidity" of first love, this actually brings me back to being 16 again and all the antecedent problems of wooing the girl I loved

I love that song, but have you seen the film Chungking Express? Uses it around 15 times, no jokes. Really can't think of anything else when I hear the song now. Which isn't a bad thing.

Right, according to last.fm my most listened to song since 2009 is this...

I think this song ranks right up there with the best intro's/album openers of all time.

PoorOldPo 02-07-2012 10:07 AM

Thats definitely a good song to have as your favourite.
