In case there's someone in the universe who don't know it, it's a song for Syd Barrett who had a mental breakdown and left the band. The start of the song is supposed to be like someone listening to a song on the radio and playing along.

Beautiful, powerful .. and easy to play on a guitar ;) I played this a lot when I was learning.

I managed to do a speech at my lovers funeral and I ended with " and in the words of my favourite band 'How I Wish You Were Here' my love."

The really odd thing here is that a song that means so much to someone can seem inconsequential in the context of this thread as we all have different perspectives on life.

What is emotional and lyrically pertinent to one person is inconsequential to another person depending on their circumstances.

This will do for me though.

One song will never contain all perspectives on life.

I know it's not the best song of all time, but it's my favourite. And that bass...

Yeah I've always preferred the Peel version to the album version because of the bass too.

More Than This has always struck a chord with me. It reasonates with my life in so many ways.

I also think Baba should be here too.

if you wanna talk about The Who, nothing beats this:-

it's like God's fnger descended from Heaven and declared to Pete - "Play This Riff!!!!!"

I never get tired of listening to these songs, and as for capturing my "essence" there has to be two: one the positive, loving side and the other drifting to melancholy. I like to think the positive is the much stronger of the two, though.

Well I know that, but the one that captures your aura the most then.

This thread has some beautiful tracks and some interesting revelations. Out of many, this would probably be my special song :-

I`ve been playing this regularly across the years ever since it came out, and if you`re wondering why, let me try to explain:-
At first it appears to be a lazy, unassuming song by a guy with a monotonous voice who can`t be bothered with anything more than casual strumming. He`s making no great claims for himself ( We`re the fishes and all we do...) and he can`t quite make sense of what is around him; he seems to be floundering about in a kind of soupy mess of romance, childishness, mystery and the mundane and yet as the song advances, he somehow conveys that this confusion is in itself beautiful and worthy of celebration. If ever you have felt that your circumstances are drab or random, Syd is here to say, "Don`t worry, there is still something of gold to be found in them."
So, it`s a song that is both reassuring and unsettling; it`s plodding but uplifting, relaxing but puzzling, and, er, that`s why I like it !

It's nearly impossible to pick a single favourite but I guess I have to go with this

Why is it my favourite? It ticks all my boxes. It's soft, dreamy, bittersweet, memorable, it has a sense of nostalgia, I never get tired of it no matter how many times I hear it. Even the promo video is one of my favourites, it reminds me of college parties and people I used to know. It suits the music so well too. Slowdive are also one of my all-time favourite bands.
