I was thinking of doing either a monthly or weekly music off. We would choose a theme before the competition, and then have a week to submit. Submitting would be uploading onto soundcloud or whatever method you want, and then everyone listens and votes on their favorite. Live instruments and laptop musicians all welcome

Franco Pepe Kalle 01-23-2012 05:13 PM

Let's wait and see who brings their A game.

Unrelenting 01-23-2012 05:30 PM

Yeah, I'm waiting to see how much interest this will generate

Freebase Dali 01-23-2012 05:51 PM

What themes are we talking about here?

Unrelenting 01-23-2012 06:19 PM

I was thinking broad ones that can be interpreted in many ways not restricted to musical genre: like for example fear, love, joy, or stuff like post apocalypse, war, things like that. Having people vote on what theme to go with would probably be a good edition.

Ah ok. That'd definitely work better than genre-related themes.
Well, I'd be down. The real question is how many others around here are. Assuming there would be more than 3 or 4 participants, it would be great.

Unrelenting 01-23-2012 08:07 PM

I know there are a fair amount of members who make music so I'm hoping this will catch on

Blarobbarg 01-23-2012 08:31 PM

If I had any recording equipment at all I'd be on this like a fat kid on apple pie.

Too bad I don't. Will enjoy listening, though. :)

Janszoon 01-23-2012 08:53 PM

I think we should limit entries to being 30-45 seconds long. I know this probably sounds like I'm joking, but if we did this I think it would encourage (a) more entries, (b) more off-the-cuff writing, (c) greater likelihood of people actually listening to all entries and (d) more fun!

I'd definitely be in if we did it that way.

Atrocious 01-23-2012 09:11 PM

Let's do it

Oh wow, that's a pretty off the wall idea. I like it, but how does limiting it 45 seconds to one minute long?

Dr_Rez 01-23-2012 10:10 PM

I have tried this a few times and the response was terrible. I agave about 3-5 days the first time and got 4 entries. 2-3 of which actually took any effort. The next time about 1-2 weeks to do it and still only got maybe 6 entries.

If you can make it work great, ill certainly help if needed and participate at the very least.

edit: Saw Janzsoons post. Great idea. Although I would say a little longer but thats the right idea.

Maybe. Honestly, I think the shorter the better.

How about if we just say "under a minute"?

Unrelenting 01-23-2012 10:14 PM

Under minute works for me. I'd love to see what comes of that

ThePhanastasio 01-23-2012 10:15 PM

I've been playing more lately; I'd probably be down.

Unrelenting 01-23-2012 10:20 PM

Allright so far we've got 6 people who've expressed interest. I'll leave this up for another day or so see if anyone else wants in, then I'll make the official thread

That sounds good. And forgive me for misspelling your name!

Unrelenting 01-23-2012 10:44 PM

Had an idea regarding themes: maybe every week one of the participants would be assigned to choose a theme? Or come up with a list to vote on?

I like your first option. Whatever option makes things move fastest.

ThePhanastasio 01-23-2012 10:49 PM

Yeah - a poll would only slow things down.

Putting the names of participants in a randomizer to determine order or some such, then taking the first person and making them come up with a theme (then the second, and so on...) would be way quicker.

Genius

Freebase Dali 01-23-2012 11:23 PM

As far as the length, I think it would be fine if the upper limit was a minute max. It doesn't mean it's a necessity for it to be that length, but some people might be a bit constricted if they so happen to prefer a more round-about way with muisc making and end up being disqualified because their song happened to go beyond 30 seconds or something like that.
It might take certain people longer to say what they really want to say. As long as there's a reasonable limit to how long something can be, because we don't want someone going all prog on us, it should be fine. And for those that can do what they need to do in less than a minute, more power to them.

My thoughts, anyway.

That's kind of the point of the 30-45 second limit though, to simply make it so that people just toss snippets and ideas out there instead of fully-realized compositions. I feel like we'll get more active participation that way and people won't take things so seriously that they spend three months creating their track.

Rubato 01-24-2012 07:02 AM

I actually like the idea of being forced to say what you're trying to say in the shortest time possible, with broad themes you just need to set a specific atmosphere rather than trying reach a point in a story. I'm in.

Phantom Limb 01-24-2012 10:01 AM

This sounds awesome, you can count me in.

Unrelenting 01-24-2012 11:10 AM

Alright we've got a good bunch of people so I'm going to make the official thread

Phantom Limb 01-24-2012 11:24 AM

I think that tracks shouldn't HAVE to be less than a minute, but we should aim for that. I will certainly listen to any track posted regardless of the length, plus you can always fast-forward if you're really in a rush.

Unrelenting 01-24-2012 11:26 AM

Like I said in the rules, It's fine if people go over by a bit. The original reason I made this, is I know my skills in production could use a bit of work, and giving a time limit will be a good way to make me more creative with my compositions
